Quintus Arce was one of the superheroes to use the name Bloodwynd, and was an ally of the Justice League America.
History
Arce was a descendant of Clemma, a slave who killed her owner Jacob Whitney with the Blood Gem, a precious stone forged from the pain and anger of Whitney's slaves. The gem became her family's legacy, carrying both power and a curse, and was eventually passed to Quintus Arce, who hoped to protect his family from the curse by taking it on. For their sake, he insisted they maintain a fiction that he had died in a car crash, and used the gem to become the superhero Bloodwynd.[1]
Eventually, however, he was trapped within the Blood Gem, which bonded with and became affixed to the chest of Justice League member Martian Manhunter, who took on the identity of Bloodwynd himself. Arce was later freed from the gem by the League's Ray and their ally the Atom. He fought alongside the Justice League, but was ultimately felled by Felix Faust, and condemned to Hell by the Blood Gem's curse. In a simulacrum of the Hall of Justice in the Circle of Fraud, he was psychologically tortured in a torment loop until freed by Raphael Arce, his nephew and the new Bloodwynd. He turned on his jailers and gave up the gem's burden to his nephew, finally allowing him to escape from Hell.[1]
