Renee Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department underneath Commissioner Gordon who frequently allies herself with the vigilante Batman and his associates. Her most regular partner was Crispus Allen. She is openly lesbian and has had relationships with Kate Kane and Daria Hernandez. Following the death of her mentor Vic Sage during 52 she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question in efforts to eliminate the Religion of Crime. She is a member of Batman Incorporated and the Global Peace Agency.
Renee Montoya was originally created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian for Batman: The Animated Series in the DCAU, premiering in the episode "Pretty Poison" (1992). Her first appearance in comics was Batman #475 written by Alan Grant (1992), which was published before her first TV appearance because of the shorter lead time in comics production.
