The Republican Party is one of the two main political groups in the United States, opposite the Democratic Party. Republican ideals are traditionally conservative, usually identifying with American right wing politics.
History
Formation
The Republican party was founded in 1854 in the northern, "free" states, with their main political ideal being their opposition to slavery. Abraham Lincoln was elected the first Republican president, and the nation erupted into a civil war over the issue of slavery.
The party underwent a major political shift during the 20th Century, changing its demographic from Northerners to primarily appealing to conservative Southerners.
New Earth
California Republican governor Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980. During his term, he survived four separate assassination attempts.[1][2][3][4] Due to manipulations by G. Gordon Godfrey, President Reagan initiated a law that made all superheroism temporary illegal before the ban was eventually lifted.[5]
In 1992, Etrigan the Demon ran a highly successful political campaign for the Republican nomination against George H. W. Bush. Etrigan, having been magically summoned due to a political analyst accidentally inputting the information for an ideal Republican candidate, ran his campaign with the intention of declaring war on both Heaven and Hell with the United States' military if he were to win. Though he gained a lot of attention, Etrigan conceded, and Bush was elected.[6]
In 2008, the Republican presidential candidates were Katherine McClellan[7] and Bob Ridgeway.[8] The political race became especially heated when Green Arrow publicly endorsed Democrat nominee Davis Brewster, prompting many other heroes to discuss their political opinions. However, the election was won by Democrat nominee Martin Suarez.[9]
Watchmen
Movie
During the time of the second generation of superheroes, Republican politician J. David Keene was elected as senator for New York in 1972. In 1976, with the rise of anti-vigilante sentiment across the nation, Senator Keene proposed the "Keene Act", which made masked heroism illegal. The bill had huge support and was passed into law.[10]
Due to the Comedian killing the potential whistleblowers Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the Watergate scandal never happened, and Republican president Richard Nixon's presidency went untarnished for years.[11]
In 1975, with huge political support for his victory in the Vietnam War by calling in Doctor Manhattan, President Nixon attempted to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which limited a presidency to two terms, in order to run for a third term in 1976.[12]
TV Show
Republican president Richard Nixon successfully abolished term limits and at point was so popular, his head was added as the fifth president on Mount Rushmore.[13]
However, after the interdimensional squid attack on New York City on October 2, 1985, Nixon eventually left the office and was replaced by Democrat president Robert Redford, as organized by Adrian Veidt.
Over the years, President Nixon's reputation would be sullied to the point that he became an icon for financially poor, racist white citizens. Trailer parks sprung up across the nation called "Nixonvilles", with the park in Tulsa, Oklahoma erecting a giant caricatured statue of Nixon and, in the 21st century, starting a white supremacist group called the Seventh Kavalry.[14]
Joe Keene, Jr., son of the original J. David Keene that had passed the Keene Act years earlier, was elected Oklahoma's Republican senator in the 21st Century.
In Tulsa, after what would be known as the "White Night" in which Seventh Kavalry members raided police officers homes on Christmas Eve, 2016 and killed most of them, Senator Keene successfully passed the Defense of Police Act - also known as DOPA - which allowed Tulsa's police department to wear masks like vigilantes to protect their identities in the future. Though the law would be criticized for its hypocrisy about masked vigilantism, the law saw major improvement in law enforcement safety, and Keene was poised for the Republican nomination in the 2020 election.
However, eventually, a conspiracy in Tulsa was discovered that both senator Keene and police chief Judd Crawford were part of a white supremacist group called Cyclops that acted as the leadership for the Seventh Kavalry. Senator Keene's plan to drain Doctor Manhattan's power into himself backfired and he exploded, ending his chance for the 2020 presidency.[15]
