The Rhine historically marked the north-eastern border of the Roman Empire, and has traditionally been considered to mark the boundary between the Latin and Germanic-speaking regions of Europe. In the present day it marks the border between France and Germany, and so has been significant in both World Wars.

The river starts from a number of tributaries in the Swiss and Austrian Alps, before passing through Lake Constance, Basel, Strassbourg, Mannheim, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Koblenz, Bonn, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Arnhem and Rotterdam.
