Dick Grayson was a superhero and protégé of Batman. Grayson first acted as Batman's original Robin before striking out on his own as Nightwing. However, after his accidental death caused by Damian Wayne, Dick became the successor to Boston Brand as the second Deadman, a superhero working from beyond the grave.

Dick as Robin

Dick Grayson was a circus performer with his parents; together they were the Flying Graysons. After his parents' murderers, Dick was mentored by Bruce Wayne, eventually learning of the billionaire's second life as Batman, and becoming the hero's first sidekick as Robin.

While he was Robin, Dick joined a group of young heroes that called themselves the Titans. [1]

Eventually, Dick graduated from his role as Robin and became a hero in his own right called Nightwing, and his former sidekick role was filled by three other boys over the course of multiple years: Jason, Tim, and Damian. Dick and Damian would become close friends, choosing to often work together in Gotham City.

Richard Grayson (Injustice The Regime) 002

Grayson as Nightwing

Nightwing was a member of the Insurgency and stood by Batman when he did not choose to side with Superman in his efforts to police the world. He is seen as a mentor to Damian and is respected by other members of the Justice League.

When Wonder Woman makes a call to arms to other members of the League in an effort to find Superman's parents, Richard is among those people who attempt to find the location of Mirror Master and to stand guard outside the World's End bar in Keystone City.

After Superman announces that he will be vacating Arkham Asylum to make Gotham safer, Nightwing chooses to support Batman as opposed to Damian who sides with Superman's League. At Arkham, Richard acts as the voice of reason and tries to discern why Damian is siding with Kal-El versus his father. After Harley Quinn releases all the inmates, including Solomon Grundy, onto the League, Batman, Nightwing and Green Arrow, Richard fights various inmates and goes to help Damian.

When Grundy throws Diana underground the structure, Richard tells Superman that Grundy's dead, and that Superman doesn't have to hold back in order to release some tension. Superman lasers off Grundy's hand and Richard opens his fingers to release Damian. Damian and Richard continue to fight inmates above ground, with Robin severely beating the Riddler. Nightwing tells Damian that Robin doesn't beat people when they're down, but Wayne retaliates, saying "You're not Robin anymore!" throwing one of his escrima sticks at Richard's head. It contacts and causes Richard to fall backwards onto a rock, breaking his neck and thus killing him.

Damian then tries to wake Richard up, but to no avail. When Clark ordered the inmates to return back to their cells, Bruce was shocked to see Richard dead, he shoved Damian away and wept as he held Richard's dead body. Richard's death then sparked various reactions from Leaguers and inmates. Nightwing's death remains as a point of contention between Bruce and Damian, and the rest of the Justice League.

Year Three

It is revealed in the Annual that shortly after Superman's murder of Joker, Dick had returned to the Teen Titans, still grieving the losses of Beast Boy and Kid Flash. Although Starfire asks him to take control of the Titans once again, Dick insists on staying by Batman's side for the conflict but warns her to keep the Titans from getting involved further with Superman. His advice falls on deaf ears, however, as an angered Superboy attacks Superman, eventually leading to the Titans' imprisonment by Superman.

When Boston Brand was critically injured by the Spectre, he passed on his mantle of Deadman to Dick Grayson before peacefully passing on. As the new Deadman, Dick eventually finds Batman and Superman's factions fighting each other, and he possesses Poison Ivy and pilots one of Batman's jets in order to join in. He then possesses Shazam, reverting him back to Billy Batson and giving his mentor a more fitting goodbye before having him knock out Billy. When Trigon and Mister Mxyzptlk's clash begins to distort reality itself, Dick is the only one able to move between the Houses of Secret and Mystery. He, John Constantine and Doctor Fate then create a plan to send both immortals into the Void, and Dick goes to Superman's side to ask for Billy's help as Shazam.

Before departing, Dick accepts Damian's apology for the fatal accident.
