Nightwing is a future version of Robin.
History
After Starfire was transported to the future trying to catch the time thief Warp, she discovered a version of history where she had never come back through the time portal.
In this future, Robin had graduated to a new superhero alias - Nightwing, and patrolled Jump City by himself as its last superhero.
In the final confrontation with Warp though, after Starfire had visited all the other Teen Titans, Nightwing and his former teammates came together to form a new team: the Titans. The Titans were successful in beating Warp, Starfire was sent back in time to her present time, and Warp was left in the future as a baby.[2]
Nightwing's future wasn't erased by Starfire going back in time. Instead, Nightwing and the Titans raised baby Warp to be a member of their team. However, after years of working together, the Titans realized they couldn't alter Warp's path of becoming a supervillain. Warp, still a young child, gained access to time travel technology and went back in time to alter history. Nightwing, having been the only Titan able to follow him, returned to the past when he was still Robin to undo the damage.
Warp altered history so that, when Grayson's parents were murdered, instead of being adopted by Bruce Wayne, he was adopted by an adult version of Warp and raised to become a supervillain. Nightwing, working with the past version of the Teen Titans, confronted Warp and his younger self, undoing the damage and setting history right.[3]
