History

Dick Grayson's aerialist paternal uncle after whom he was named . Rick had named his own son after his brother John, Dick's father, years before Dick was born and the brothers were very close. Rick was permanently paralyzed by the same act of vandalism which killed his son, wife, brother and sister-in-law when they performed a trick without the net and the acid damaged wire of their trapeze snapped.

The injuries Rick sustained that night left him unable to care for his orphaned nephew. Dick was instead taken in and raised by Bruce Wayne who was also present that night and witnessed the murder of the Grayson family excluding Dick and Rick who were the only survivors.
