In her early life, Rita Farr was a renowned Hollywood actress, suffering an accident that made her skin elastic and gave up her career, being rescued by the gentle doctor Niles Caulder, better known as The Chief. Seeking to do good, Rita joined Niles' superhero team, the Doom Patrol, befriending her teammates: Negative Man, real name Larry Trainor, a former test pilot who gained radioactive powers, and Robotman, real name Cliff Steele, a former racecar driver who became a brain in a robot body. In her heroic adventures, Rita took on the alter-ego Elasti-Girl and faced with the team different threats like the Mutant Trio, among others, and although society rejected them, the Doom Patrol always protected the world.[1]

Eventually, Rita, Larry and Cliff were captured and imprisoned by supposedly their immortal enemy, General Immortus, but after being freed by the nocturne vigilante, Batman, and the youngest member of the Doom Patrol, Beast Boy, real name Gar Logan, a metahuman who can transform into animals, they discovered that Mad Mod, a villain obsessed with fashion, captured them to use Cliff's body as a suit, sparking a fight in which Gar defeated Mod. After escaping, the Doom Patrol recovered their uniforms, thanking Batman for saving them, before setting off with Batman to stop the amalgam-powered supervillain, Animal Vegetable Mineral Man.[2]

Despite Niles' request for help against the mutants, Rita refused due to the failure in Paris, however, Batman encouraged her to become a hero again and save civilians, forcing Rita to regain her original form as Elasti-Girl, becoming giant to defeat the Mutant Trio, agreeing to search for the rest of the Doom Patrol.

In search of the rest of the team, Rita, Niles and Batman fought in a circus against the Animal Vegetable Mineral Man, saving Larry from the supervillain, causing Batman to use reverse psychology to bring him back into action. Finally, the reformed Doom Patrol sought out Cliff, protecting him from their old robotic supervillain, Arsenal, and they were reconciled by Cliff, who was upset that the team was helping him until he finally helped his friends, defeating Arsenal, returning to the team, before the Doom Patrol and Batman were captured by General Zahl.

Having a moment of decision, Niles granted the team the decision to choose, with Rita remembering the times of the pilgrims and together with the team, they agreed to sacrifice themselves for the island, so Zahl tried to activate the bomb, something that Batman tried to prevent, but Zahl activated the real detonator in his hat, killing Rita and the Doom Patrol with the bomb.[1]
