The Robot Teacher was a robot constructed on Krypton by Superman's father Jor-El to instruct his son in the use of his super-powers on Earth.

History

Testing Superboy

Superboy meets the Robot Teacher.

Although Jor-El's initial plan failed due to him not having sufficient time to build a rocket large enough for the Robot Teacher, the mechanical instructor's body was strong enough to survive the planet's explosion. Years later, after the twelve-year-old Kal-El had begun his career as Superboy, the Robot Teacher arrived on Earth and sought out the Boy of Steel in his adoptive hometown of Smallville.

The electronic teacher began testing Superboy's use of his powers, stating that if the Boy of Steel failed he would have to give up his superhero career forever in accordance with the late Jor-El's wishes. After a series of tests, Superboy ultimately proved himself worthy and the Robot Teacher departed for other worlds in search of new pupils.

During Clark Kent's senior year at Smallville High School, the Robot Teacher returned to test Superboy's abilities again now that he was almost a man.

Testing Supergirl

The Robot Teacher disguised as "Topar".

Years later, after learning of the existence of Superman's cousin Supergirl, the Robot Teacher returned to Earth in order to test her under the guise of a malevolent energy being called Topar. After Supergirl passed the test of defeating Topar, the Robot Teacher revealed his true identity and motives and left Earth again.

• This version of the Robot Teacher, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
