Roger Higgins was an American Cold War scientist who developed a suit of armor which he used to fight crime as the Shield.

He disappeared in 1963, and his armor was recovered decades later.

General Marion Higgins had a team of scientists attempt to reverse engineer the armor, though without success because Roger had retained one vital component. Instead the General ordered a new design based on what they could discover. This created a new prototype, using his own son, Lt. Joseph Higgins, as the test subject.
