Cosmic Boy is a member of Darkseid's Omega Legion in the 31st Century of the Absolute Universe.

Origin

Darkseid created the Absolute Universe to be a world which ran on despair rather than hope, and heroes would be a few embattled underdogs lacking the key advantages they possessed on Earth 0. Rather than being unified under a United Planets inspired by the legacy of Superman, the 31st Century of the Absolute Universe was a period of endless war where the heroes of the 21st Century had been long forgotten.

In this dark timeline, the planets of Braal and Titan had been at war for a generation as the Braalians tried to exterminate the telepathic Titanians, fearing their ability to look into the minds of others. Rokk Krinn was a Braalian soldier who was captured by the Titanians and held on one of their deep space prison ships. One day the prisoner in the next cell, a Titanian war criminal called Imra Ardeen who had been locked away as even her own people feared her power and savagery, manipulated the minds of her guards to make them kill each other and escaped her cell. Rokk offered to help her escape the ship if she freed him and she released him too. Imra converted Rokk to the worship of Darkseid, the true god of their reality, and the two abandoned their people's war to travel the universe, seeking out others who felt Darkseid's presence. In time Imra gathered the Legion and they prepared for the "Great Collision" between their reality and Earth 0.[1][2][3]

Legion of Darkseid

The Omega Legion invaded the 31st Century of Earth 0, where they did battle with four alternate versions of themselves. The Omega Legion slaughtered most of their counterparts and captured Booster Gold, who had been sent to the future while trying to follow Darkseid through a rift into the Absolute Universe. A few survivors managed to get away and go into hiding, taking Brainiac 5 with them. Another band remained behind to keep track of the Omega Legion and so Chameleon infiltrated them disguised as Cosmic Boy.[4]

Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl slaughtered the Fatal Five, the greatest villains of that era. They captured the only one of the five who managed to flee, Validus, but decided to spare him so that he would torture Booster Gold.[5]

The Time Trapper, whose history had been rewritten to make him an evolved future incarnation of Doomsday, sensed that Darkseid would return. He tried to goad Superman into killing him so he could resurrect in a form which would possess the godlike power needed to stop Darkseid, but failed. The Time Trapper returned to the End of Time and was set upon by Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.[6] They tortured him while Saturn Girl tried to rip the information about Superman from his mind.[7] The Time Trapper managed to escape and fled to find the World Forger. Rather than chase him, the Legionnaires decided to go where they knew he would eventually return: to Superman.[8] Despite Darkseid's instructions not to engage Superman, Saturn Girl travelled to Smallville in the 21st Century to try and understand why Darkseid saw him as a threat. She tried to use her telepathic powers to put him in a vegetative state, but the Time Trapper rescued him and teleported them both away.[2]

Superman came to the future to help his old friends in the Legion, along with one of the Legion's most hated enemies Superboy-Prime. Chameleon met them while he was on burial detail while disguised, and lead them back to the Legion's hideout. Four surviving counterparts of Brainiac 5 were able to hack the captured cyborg's systems and learn that the Legion were using the Time Institute as their base. Superman realised that the Omega Legion must be holding Booster Gold at the Institute, and lead Prime and the Legionnaires on a rescue mission.

However just as they were about to sneak into the ruins of the Institute, Superboy-Prime blew Chameleon's cover. The rest of the Legion flew in and Prime yelled at Superman to get Booster Gold. While Superman was inside the Institute Omega Legion quickly overpowered the Legionnaire survivors and Superboy-Prime defected to their side. When Superman and Booster Gold came out they found the Omega Legion waiting for them. Superman defiantly squared off against them but Superboy-Prime blasted him in the back.[4]

Lightning Lad believed they could not trust Prime and said they should simply kill him and Superman; but Saturn Girl could sense Prime's resentment of Superman and his hatred of the Legion and decided to give him a chance to prove his loyalty. Booster Gold was suffused with both chronal energy and Darkseid's Omega energy, meaning they could use his blood in a sacrifice to allow Darkseid to manifest physically once more. Saturn Girl ordered Prime to kill Booster Gold to prove that he was one of them. However, he instead turned on the Omega Legion and attacked them, to Saturn Girl's shock. Prime threw Booster Gold and Superman through a portal to the 21st Century, and then he and the surviving Legionnaires charged into battle against the Omega Legion.[3] The Omega Legion managed to overwhelm the survivors of the other Legions and Superboy-Prime fled back to the 21st Century, pursued by Sun Boy.[9]

DC K.O.

In the 21st Century, the heroes and some villains of that era entered a fighting tournament to win control of the Heart of Apokolips at the centre of Earth and become their reality's "King Omega", a being capable of fighting and defeating Darkseid.[10]

Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad travelled back to Russia in 1908, causing the Tunguska event. They planned to prevent the rise of the Flash Family, one of Darkseid's major obstacles. To this end they brought along XS, the living embodiment of "Omega Speed", a cosmic force created by Darkseid to destroy and replace the Speed Force. They also met with Whip Whirlwind, a younger version of Max Mercury, and convinced him to accept Omega Speed.

The Flash and Impulse sensed the damage being done to the Speed Force by Omega Speed. They attempted to travel back to the Battle of the Watchtower and stop Darkseid but failed. The Flash and Impulse fled and landed in Russia in 1908 with the Legion. They evaded capture when the Legion sent XS and Whirlwind after them, and so Cosmic Boy realised that to prevent the Flash Family existing they needed to prevent Barry Allen gaining his powers. Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad travelled into the future with Whip Whirlwind.[11][12]
