Rose Walker is the immortal granddaughter of Desire of the Endless, and mother of Ivy Walker. She was supposed to be a Dream Vortex, but was substituted first by a relative then by Wan.
History
At some point, Rose was a babysitter to Daniel Hall.[2] She should have died to prevent her Vortex abilities from destroying the Dreaming, but was saved by a family sacrifice.[3] When she was 22, she stopped aging.[1]
At age 50, she met Dream at Fawney Rig, and introduced him to her daughter, Ivy. The two fell in love. Shortly after, Rose's mother was diagnosed with esophageal cancer[1]. Desire came to Rose in a dream to inform her that Ivy was being magically controlled to poison Dream, but Rose was too late to stop it. Ivy then attempted suicide by overdose and was hospitalized at the same institution as her grandmother, where Rose then spent most of her time. When the doctors had advised Rose to turn off Ivy's life support, Dream appeared, took Ivy away and transported Rose to an unconscious Lucien, who was taken to the same hospital, where she told him her story.[2]
After her mother's death, Rose, along with most of humanity, lost the ability to feel due to Wan's interference in the Dreaming. Desire helped her reawaken her Vortex abilities, which allowed her to feel some emotion. She hijacked a bus to go to Fawney Rig, where she was able to save a dying Dora by connecting to her desires, letting her feed on her fear, and reminding her of the power of self-belief. She then followed Dora into the Dreaming[4], where her presence as the Vortex helped to enable Dream's return to it.[3]
After unmaking Wan's destructive alter ego, Dream declared that Rose must die, as the continued presence of a Vortex would destroy the Dreaming. However, as King of the Dreaming, Wan was able to take her place, and willingly sacrificed himself instead.[5]
