The Royal Canadian Mounted Police or the Mounties, are a federal police force in Canada.
History
This national police force was formed in 1873, under the name "North-West Mounted Police", which was changed in 1920 to "Royal Canadian Mounted Police". A numerically small force, tasked with maintaining law and order across vast reaches of territory, much of it wilderness for much of the nation's history, the "Mounties" have contended with every kind of outlaw from common robbers to cattle rustlers to mine claim jumpers, to illicit militias.[citation needed]
Several noteworthy officers have served with the RCMP, including Daniel Crow-Brings-Darkness, Sergeant Jim Reynolds, Sergeant O'Malley, and Dan Maginnis
