Ruben Blüd was the previous Captain Blüd and leader of The Crew of the Crossed Keys, a secret society in Bludhaven. He was the adopted father of Bea Bennett. He eventually retired to become The Quartermaster of The Hold, the Crew's underground bank, making Bea the new captain.

Ruben met Bea when he and his crew boarded a superyacht owned by a billionaire, only to find it empty except for a thirteen years old Bea, who had stolen it single-handed. He was impressed, recruited her into the Crew of the Crossed Keys and adopted her as his daughter. He named her as his successor rather than his biological son Dirk, a violent criminal.[1]

Two years ago Dick Grayson, who was suffering from amnesia and living as a cab driver named "Ric Grayson", was given an envelope by a mysterious man who claimed to have known him when he was a child in Haly's Circus. As the envelope was addressed to Dick Grayson, "Ric" believed it was not for him and he should not open it unless his memories ever returned. He wanted to store it somewhere safe and Bea put him in contact with the Hold. The Quartermaster met with Ric at the Prodigal Bar and took custody of the envelope. Ric asked him to list the account holder as "Nightwing".[2]

In the present Tony Zucco and Double Dare attempted to rob the Hold. They got away with Boss Maroni's prized diamond, the Eye of Kahndaq, shooting the Quartermaster in the process. Nightwing, who had followed them, tackled Zucco on the beach and they were both quickly surrounded by the Hold's mercenaries. The mercenaries were about to kill them both but the Quartermaster stopped them, revealing that Nightwing was a customer of the Hold; much to Dick's surprise as he had forgotten "Ric's" encounter with the Hold. The Hold turned Zucco over to the police, along with incontrovertible proof of his crimes.[3]

A new supervillain known as Heartless broke Zucco out of prison, and Zucco told him about the Hold. They once again planned to rob it and Zucco lead Heartless to the hidden entrance to the Hold in the Old Fishing District. Heartless killed the Quartermaster when he came out to confront them, but when the two descended into the cavern they found that all the goods, and the ship the Hold stored them on, had disappeared.[2]

Powers

  • Superhuman Durability: Despite his frail appearance, the Quartermaster survived being shot through the eye at point blank range. He appeared to suffer only a small degree of pain and was on his feet again within minutes, seemingly unhurt besides the loss of his eye.[3]
