Ruby Sokov is Red Lantern, the daughter of Vladimir Sokov, the Golden Age Red Lantern, and the modern wielder of the mystical Crimson Flame.
History
Origin
Born in 1951, Ruby was imbued with a direct connection to the Crimson Flame that empowered her father, turning her into a "living power ring" and drawing the attention of the Soviet 'Red Labs' that created her father's power ring. Ruby was taken for study and in response, her father stormed the lab, killing every scientist within. His fate afterwards was unknown, but he was believed dead despite the fact that a body was never found.[3]
Ruby was sent to be raised by a foster family, but when she was thirteen her powers manifested for the first time. The ensuing blast killed twenty-three people, including her foster parents. The Russian government tried to capture her but she fled, killing seven more people sent to arrest her. She learned that her biological father had been the Red Lantern and was convinced that he was alive and being held prisoner in the Red Labs. She made it her mission to find and rescue him.[1]
Searching for her father
In 2023, the time-displaced Helena Wayne wanted to recruit Ruby into the Justice Society as she had been a member in Helena's time. Her father's arch-enemy Green Lantern refused and went to Russia to try and convince Ruby to turn herself in for the men she had killed searching for her father.
Meanwhile Ruby had finally discovered the location of the Red Labs and fought her way in, killing multiple guards, but found Green Lantern waiting for her. After a brief fight he stopped her and told her that her father was dead. He took her to a bar and asked her to turn herself in but she refused, saying that the Russian government would just hand her over to the Red Labs.
Scott assured Ruby that her father was dead and he saw him die. He told her that her father wouldn't want her to have become a killer and she yelled at him that he had been her father's enemy and not to act like Vladimir was his friend. After a pause, Alan agreed that they had been enemies, but Ruby sensed he was lying. He admitted that he couldn't let the Russian government take Ruby and told her that Helena Wayne believed she had it in her to be a hero. He took her back to America with him to meet Helena.[1] However, while they were discussing the terms of Ruby joining the JSA Helena was called away to deal with The Legionnaire, who had just appeared and volunteered to join.[4]
Ruby was allowed to join the JSA under Alan's close supervision. She participated in the mission to capture Gentleman Ghost.[2]
