Sal Maroni was a mob boss in Gotham City.
History
Sal Maroni initially aproached Harvey Dent as a businessman wanting to support his campaign for distric attorney. Harvey had no reason to doubt his intentions, so he accepted his help. After the election, Harvey discovered that Maroni had ties to organized crime and his son Umberto was charged as an accomplice to murder. Maroni believed that he could pressure Harvey to drop the charges, since Maroni had financed his campaign. Harvey refused and convicted Umberto to jail, where he was murdered by another inmate.
Gotham's Building Comission called for an inquiry into the business dealings of Sal Maroni. He knew that Harvey Dent would show up for the trial and arranged an attempt on his life. He bribed a police officer to deliver him a chemical cocktail inside of a coffee cup after the trial had ended. He approached Harvey as he was being interviewed by the WGBS and threw the cup at his face. It didn't kill him, but instead scarred half of his face and put him in a medically induced coma. Sal Maroni was taken into custody on the spot, although one hour after his arrest, a group of rogue cops hijacked his police transport. They drove to an abandoned warehouse, where they recorded themselves shooting Sal Maroni in the head.[1]
