Sam Simeon, also known as Ape, is a psychic gorilla and the partner of Angel O'Day, making them Angel and the Ape.

Sam Simeon originally hailed from Gorilla City, a city in the jungles of Africa populated by intelligent gorillas. He possessed amazing intelligence and force of mind capabilities, powers granted due to being the grandson of the city's ruler Gorilla Grodd. Sam had a habit of first speaking in his native gorilla language, then repeating himself in English.

Sam caught the attention of the father and daughter duo Theo and Angel O'Day while they were vacationing in Africa. They were fascinated by Sam's social skills and invited to take him back to the United States with them. Sam agreed, in part due to his desire to become a professional artist and also to stop Angel from pestering him.

Arriving in New York City, Sam successfully applied his art skills and was employed as an artist for DC Comics. He occasionally joined his friend Angel in her detective agency activities. In his mind, he was more of a chaperone than an actual detective partner, as Angel could sometimes be a bit airheaded on her adventures.

Over time, Sam and Angel grew apart but occasionally reunited to go on missions together.

Powers

Abilities

Weaknesses

  • Power Limitation: Sam's mental abilities have a limit. If he loses focus while projecting himself in his human form, he returns to his appearance as a gorilla.

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • Sam Simeon was originally portrayed as a partially talking, competent ape who happened to live and work among human beings. His psychic powers and connection to Gorilla Grodd were later retcons to tie him closer to the greater DC Universe.
