Sappho was a famous Greek poetess who lived on the Island of Lesbos, in Ancient Greece, about 600 BCE.[1]
History
She was so sensitive that she couldn't stand the sight of suffering in any form (like a flower getting sunburned, a fish getting exhausted trying to leap upstream, a hungry bear cub with a sick mother...). That's why Wonder Woman exclaims: "Suffering Sappho!" whenever she sees anyone suffering.[1]
Sappho is a historical figure of great importance to the Amazons in general. There is even a Sappho Hall on Paradise Island, named after her.[2]
