Scott Free, known as the superhero and escape artist Mister Miracle, is a New God. He married Big Barda and the duo resided on Earth before the Anti-Life virus outbreak.
History
Scott Free was born to Highfather, the ruler of New Genesis. After a drawn-out war with the forces of Apokolips, Highfather suggested a peace agreement to its ruler and his brother Darkseid, in which they would give up their sons to the other for them to be adopted. Darkseid agreed and sent his son Orion to be adopted by Highfather, while adopting Scott. Scott however later escaped to Earth where he married Big Barda and fathered a son named Jacob. He also became the superhero and escape artist known as "Mister Miracle".[1] After finding out that Darkseid had kidnapped Cyborg, Superman asked Barda and Scott for help in rescuing him, to which they agreed.[2]
They soon learnt about the outbreak of the Anti-Life virus on Earth and Scott went to Apokolips with Barda to check whether his father was really dead. Being unable to find any trace of him in the ruins of the destroyed Apokolips, he assumed he was and felt pretty happy about the tyrant's death, though also feeling sad for the death of his home planet. Mister Terrific discovered that the virus originated from Apokolips and went to their home when they returned to Earth. After finding out from them that the planet was destroyed, he went along with them to the Kord Industries headquarters. The three rescued Booster Gold and Blue Beetle from the Anti-Living, before detailing their plan to them about using magic to stop the virus.[3]
Arriving at Liverpool in Blue Beetle's Bug, they rescued John Constantine from a horde of Anti-Living, before trying to recruit him in order to undo the virus. John however stated that magic couldn't stop it and rejected helping them in figuring out a way, instead going to the Oblivion Bar. This caused Mister Terrific to use his other plan - using Booster's time machine stored at the home of Fire and Ice in Malibu. Blue Beetle's Bug was however hit by the infected Fire when it reached their home, and crash landed into the building. Barda and Mister Miracle decided to hold off the horde of Anti-Living at the house, in order to give others the chance of using the time machine, but the two soon found themselves outnumbered. Saying last words to each other before being overwhelmed, they shared a last kiss.[3]
While Barda was infected, however Mister Miracle got away due to his knack of escaping the impossible, even though he regretted surviving. He hid out for the next five years at a remote cottage in the wild, preferring to remain unbothered by the business of other superheroes. Detective Chimp figured out that the New Gods may have the knowledge to cure the virus and also found out where Scott was hiding. He and Constantine went to his hiding spot, convincing him to help them by revealing that there was a cure with which he could bring back his infected wife.[4] Arriving in Poison Ivy's Gotham Jugle, the three told the other heroes about stealing Metron's Mobius Chair. They then hashed a plan to trap him by using Madame Xanadu's crystal ball (stolen by Constantine), capable of telling the future.[1]
Going to New Genesis with Jon Kent, Cassie Sandsmark, Mary Marvel, Cyborg and Dinah Lance, Scott was interrupted by Orion who chastized him for bringing the source of the Anti-Life virus (Cyborg himself) to their home. When Scott defended Cyborg stating he was a person, Orion started punching him repeatedly, with Scott obliging his orders to stand up whenever he was knocked down. Jon interrupted the beating and quickly knocked out Orion, before Highfather came in and agreed to help the heroes in calling out to Metron. Before they left, he also showed Scott his grown up son and told him that he shouldn't neglect being a father, regardless of what happened to Barda.[1]
In the ruins of Apokolips, Metron appeared and met the heroes of Earth. Scott showed him Madame Xanadu's crystal ball, and Metron became interested. As he told him to give it to him, Scott trapped him in inescapable handcuffs. The heroes then tried getting him off Mobius Chair, but he soon overpowered them and broke free of Scott's trap, before smashing him into the frozen core of Apokolips. As he escaped, Jon and Mary caught up to him, before reasoning with him that knowledge would be in danger if Earth was destroyed. Metron allowed Cyborg to use his chair to find the cure in exchange for using the crystal ball. The heroes went back, but unknown to them, Apokolips' core had developed cracks due to Scott crashing into it, allowing the infected Darkseid to break free.[1]
