Notes

  • This is a Post-Crisis Retcon of the JLA's origin, which was presented originally in Justice League of America #9. The original rol call also included Batman (absent in this retcon), and Wonder Woman (substitued by Black Canary). Superman joined the JLA at the end of the original tale, but in this retcon he flies off before the other heroes can interact with him (Seemingly, the Appellaxians have no access to kryptonite in this retcon). In the original tale, Aquaman fought the Glass creature, not the Mercury Monster.
  • This issue is reprinted in Secret Origins of the World's Greatest Super-Heroes.

Trivia

  • When the heroes reach Antarctica, and Martian Manhunter sees Superman destroying the last Appellaxian, he exclaims: "By Tarkas". This is a clear reference to Tars Tarkas, a character in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars.
  • When deciding what name to give the group they would form, Green Lantern suggests Justice Society II, to which The Flash suggests The Avengers.
  • The water body where Aquaman fights the Mercury Monster is unnamed; taking into account the proximity of Everglades, it is probably the Gulf of Mexico.
