Synopsis for "Book One: The Pilgrimage of Lucas Hart. Chapter One: The Little Man with the Knives"
Lucas Hart recounts his life: dreaming of flying as a boy, becoming enamored of film, and moving to Hollywood after his English professor Seth Rosenbloom criticizes his skills as a novelist. In 1987, Hart has broken up with his wife and daughter and begins experience torment from The Little Man with the Knives: a personification of all his anxieties and fears. He adjust to life with his new girlfriend Rhonda and local tramp Charlie Limbo but has a mental breakdown one day when a pitch to studio executives goes wrong. As he passes out late in the night, he realizes that he can fly again like when he was a child and encounters Charlie in the clouds.
