Klarion and the Deviants

Klarion travels above ground, to Manhattan, where he is discovered by Mister Melmoth, who offers the boy food and a place to stay. Melmoth is secretly looking for Limbo Town, as he himself had created the original witch-men and witch-women by interbreeding with the humans at Roanoke. He thus sends Klarion with a gang called the Deviant Ones to steal a giant subterranean drill vehicle, called the Sapper Drill, for him. Klarion uses Teekl to case the museum where the drill was held, and gang leader Billy Beezer set the Deviants loose within the museum. They steal the Drill, a manual on how to pilot it, and a map, which they will deliver to Melmoth.

When the Deviants return with the Drill, Melmoth deliberately plays Beezer against Klarion to test the witch-boy. Billy secretly fears being usurped, and Melmoth plays to those fears, telling him that Klarion's skill with magic make him a strong contender to replace Beezer as the leader. Beezer attacked Klarion, who threatens him with a death curse, humiliating him.

Later, Teekl witnesses Melmoth forcing Beezer through an Erdel gate to be enslaved on Mars. Seeing through Teekl's eyes, Klarion realizes that Melmoth intends to enslave all of the Deviants and then also discovers Melmoth's plans to use the Drill to invade and plunder Limbo Town. Klarion warns his erstwhile comrades, but resolves to simply leave instead of trying to fight Melmoth. However, Teekl convinces him that he has a responsibility to return home to stop Melmoth.
