The story of a boy who wants to be an escape artist, so he puts himself in a straight-jacket suspended upside down. His policeman older brother vows to buy him an ice cream sundae if he can break out; no-one knows the brother will get shot that day. The boy grows up, becomes the famous Mister Miracle, gets married, has a child. Wonders at how fast time goes by. Mister Miracle dies in his own home, surrounded by his loved ones... and visited by a diabolic rabbi. Mister Miracle dies screaming that something is wrong. Scene.
The story of a boy who wants to be an escape artist. The boy grows up to be the warden of Slabside Penitentiary, waiting for the beings who will execute the homeless god Aurakles for his crimes. On a hunch, the warden goes in and speaks to Aurakles, who asks him to give up his life to save the world. Locked in the cell with the mad god, the warden agrees, and accepts his offer. Scene.
Shilo Norman has been trapped in the Omega Sanction, the life trap. The Omega Sanction is a weapon used by Darkseid that, when inflicted on an individual, traps them in an endless succession of synthetic lives. Each time Shilo dies, he is reborn into a new life, each one more degrading and hopeless than the last.
In an office, DeSaad is attempting to dissect Shilo Norman's Motherboxxx when he suddenly realizes that something's wrong. The Motherbox's inner spirit, its' soul, has escaped from its body, and into Shilo Norman. Darkseid disregards this, as if her soul merged with his, she is doomed as well.
As Shilo continues to suffer from the Life Trap, he is finally confronted by his captor: the living embodiment of the Omega Sanction. Omega thrusts him into a myriad of realities, and Shilo is pushed to the brink of madness. Then, on his death-bed, Mister Miracle makes the connection: the Omega Sanction is trapped as well. Reaching out to the living trap, Mister Miracle manages to convince it to escape with him.
Darkseid realizes that Shilo has turned Omega against him, and attacks DeSaad, blaming him for their failure.
The story of a boy who wants to be an escape artist, crying for his dead brother. A therapist explains that the terrible gravity of his brother's death is warping his life like a "dying star", but by overcoming it he has mastered Omega itself, and is in control of his own destiny.
Shilo Norman opens his eyes, and realizes that he is still in the black hole he thought he escaped one week ago. Metron appears before him and explains that he has survived his initiation into the New Gods. He then asks Mister Miracle to go further, return to the world and save everyone.
Back at Star Labs, the Black hole generator Shilo used for his stunt turns itself back on, and he returns to New York.
The story of a boy who wants to be an escape artist, has escaped from the trap, and is eating an ice cream sundae with his brother. Scene.
