Quote1 Good-bye, Jordan. Quote2
Sinestro src

Sinestro is the arch nemesis of Hal Jordan and a member of the Legion of Doom.

Origin

Sinestro is what will happen to Hal Jordan if he is not kept in check. Power corrupts. And these Green Lantern rings seem to be the closest any of us could have to absolute power. Sinestro was chosen by the Green Lantern Corps to police the specified region of his home planet. He was judged to be fearless.

But over time, the power of the ring changed him. Sinestro began to rule and abuse the world's he was charged to protect. The Guardians stopped him. They took away his ring. In their desire to teach him a lesson, they banished him to a world of terrible cruelty and despotism. But for someone like Sinestro, it was like coming home. The race that lived in that placed hated the Guardians and their intergalatic police force. They created a weapon for Sinestro, one not without its own brand of irony. They gave him a ring that operated exactly like those of the Green Lantern Corps. Except his ring did not rely upon power from the central Green Lantern Corps battery. And it was capable of breaking through any form generated by a Green Lantern ring.

It is more than a desire for revenge against the Green Lantern Corps that has caused Sinestro to especially hate and strike at Hal Jordan. It is far more personal. Jordan was not corrupted by the ring as Sinestro was. Jordan was hailed as the greatest Green Lantern of them all. So, despite having a superior power ring, a weakness is revealed: Sinestro's pride.[1]

Role in the Legion of Doom

Unlike the various other members of Lex Luthor's and Brainiac's Legion of Doom, Sinestro was not infected by the microscopic worms thanks to his Yellow Power Ring, instead Brainiac stole and shrunk Sinestro's Yellow Lantern Power Battery to coerce his cooperation in their schemes. To aid Gorilla Grodd in his role as a mission coordinator for the Legion, Sinestro bequeathed the telepathic ape with a second Qwardian forged Power Ring.

To remove the threat of Hal Jordan's own Green Lantern Ring from removing the technological parasites from Brainiac's pawns in the Legion, and their targets in the Justice League of America, Sinestro stole a device capable of creating a Boom Tube from either New Genesis or Apokolips, and used it to spring a sneak attack on Jordan in the locker room of Ferris Aircraft. Sinestreo used the Boom Tube to banish Jordan to the furthest reaches of the universe, well beyond the known 3600 Sectors of the Universe. This way, Jordan was forced to store his consciousness in his Power Ring to survive indefinitely since his Ring did not have the ability to recreate the Boom Tube to return to Earth or enough power to keep him alive in the airless void, but would keep the Ring from going to Jordan's backup, John Stewart.

This was also a personal act of revenge on Jordan for his part in excommunicating Sinestro from the Green Lantern Corps, as while inside the Ring, Jordan would effectively have the power of a god and would lose himself in the false reality he could create inside the Ring, the same way Sinestro himself had become corrupted by his own time wielding a Green Power Ring.

When Grodd came under attack by the League and was overwhelmed, Sinestro saved the ape, unaware Grodd had the spare Yellow Power Ring stolen by Metamorpho.

Sinestro would kidnap Carol Ferris, John Stewart, and Hal's brothers Jack and James Jordan and later begrudgingly participated in the Legion's victory party, though the whole time Sinestro demanded his Power Battery be returned to him, considering such celebrations beneath him. When the League sprung their attack on the Legion to thwart their plans and save their loved ones, Sinestro dueled Jordan, who was wearing the Metal Man Iron and using Blue Kryptonite taken from Superman's Fortress of Solitude to disguise the fact Jordan was using the spare Yellow Ring to battle Sinestro. The teacher/student turned arch-enemies took their battle to the false sky above in Brainiac's artificial city, the whole time Jordan taunted Sinestro to the point of enraging him, at which point, the shared charge both Rings drew from was depleted and the two were reduced to fighting with their bare hands, with Hal triumphing over Sinestro and sparing his life instead of claiming revenge for Sinestro's earlier crimes, much to his fury.

When Brainiac was defeated and the Legion of Doom imprisoned, Sinestro was turned over to the Guardians of the Universe and imprisoned on Oa.
