Having lied about his age, Slade Wilson was sixteen-years-old when he first enlisted in the United States Army. After serving a stint in Korea, he was later assigned to Camp Washington where he had been promoted to the rank of Major. In the early 1960s, he met Captain Adeline Kane who was tasked with training young soldiers in new fighting techniques in anticipation of brewing troubles taking place in Vietnam. Kane was amazed at how skilled Slade was and how quickly he adapted to modern conventions of warfare. She immediately fell in love with him, and realized that he was without a doubt the most able-bodied combatant she had ever encountered. She offered to privately train Slade in guerrilla warfare. In less than a year, Slade mastered every fighting form presented to him and was soon promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Six months later, Adeline and he were married and she became pregnant with their first child. It was at this time that the war in Vietnam began to escalate and Slade was shipped overseas. At home, Adeline gave birth to their son Grant.

Some time later, Wilson volunteered for a medical experiment designed to stimulate his adrenal gland in the hopes of increasing a soldier's ability to resist truth serums. The experiment did not go as expected, and Slade fell into a coma. When he awakened however, he discovered that was now capable of using 90% of his brain capacity, and his strength, durability and agility were increased to near superhuman levels. He applied for re-assignment with the army, but they refused him. Although his condition was now stabilized, depression took hold of him and he was desperate to serve his country. At this time, Adeline became pregnant with their second child, Joseph. Unable to further his career in the military, Slade turned towards hunting. He became a world famous safari hunter and great wealth followed soon after. Adeline always suspected however that Slade felt unfulfilled.

A few years later, a group of hired mercenaries broke into the Wilsons' mansion and kidnapped young Joey. Adeline attempted to fight them off, but a gas grenade prevented her from saving her son. When Slade discovered what had happened, he knew he could not keep the truth from his wife any longer. Slade was not only a world famous safari hunter, he was also one of the world's deadliest and most highly sought after assassins - Deathstroke the Terminator. He promised Adeline that he would save their son. Together, they flew to Tangiers and squared off against a rival mercenary known as the Jackal. The Jackal wanted Slade to reveal important information relating to a client or else he would have his men kill Joey. Slade gambled on the idea that he could save his son before the Jackal could give the order. Unfortunately, Joseph's throat was slashed by one of the criminals before Slade could prevent it, destroying his vocal cords and rendering him mute. After taking Joseph to the hospital, Slade's wife, enraged at his endangerment of her son, tried to kill Slade by shooting him, but only managed to destroy his right eye. Afterward, his confidence in his physical abilities was such that he made no secret of his impaired vision, marked by his mask which has a black featureless half covering his lost eye.

In Depth

Imbued with amazing physical prowess by secret army experiments, Deathstroke the Terminator (called "Terminator" for most of his published existence) also has an amazing healing factor which can regenerate his body, even from death. He is also a crack marksman and skilled hand-to-hand combatant, and is willing to fight dirty when necessary.

However, he kept this career secret from his family, even though his wife was an expert military combat instructor, until a criminal kidnapped his younger son, Joseph, as a hostage to force Slade to divulge some secret information. Slade refused to do so, and attacked and killed the kidnappers at the rendezvous.

Slade has a long history as an enemy of the Teen Titans, beginning when his other son, Grant, became an early Titans foe called the Ravager who was physically enhanced to fulfill a contract to kill or capture the Teen Titans. However, those enhancements proved fatal and Slade agreed to complete the contract. As a result, he attacked the Titans continually and finally succeeded in capturing them by introducing Terra into the team as a spy. At the end of this plot, Slade was defeated and captured with the help of Joseph, who joined the team as Jericho. Despite their enmity, he has grudgingly worked alongside the Titans on occasion, usually to battle a greater evil. He also teamed up with the Justice League to foil an invasion of Earth by Warworld.

After the deaths of Joseph and Grant, Slade went on multiple suicide missions, trying to expatiate his guilt.

Adeline would later be killed by Starfire at her own request, as a pity killing. Adeline had previously been given Slade's blood, giving her his regenerative abilities; after her throat was slit by Vandal Savage, she found she could neither heal completely, nor kill herself despite various attempts. Starfire blasted her with a starbolt, disintegrating her completely.[1]

Deathstroke was eventually forced to kill Jericho after his possession by the tainted souls of Azarath. Recently it was revealed that Jericho managed to transfer his consciousness into Deathstroke in the instant before his death. Taking control of his father, Jericho launched a series of attacks against the current Teen Titans, most notably shattering Impulse's knee with a shotgun blast, before leaving his father's body. Deathstroke has since manipulated his one remaining child, Rose Wilson, into the mercenary business as the new Ravager, in order to find and kill Jericho.

In Identity Crisis, Deathstroke was enlisted as a bodyguard for Doctor Light, who was being chased by the Justice League. In the ensuing battle, Deathstroke nearly beat the team of Elongated Man, the Flash, Zatanna, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, The Atom, and Green Lantern. He systematically took out every member except for Rayner (due to an attempt to use Rayner's power ring) and lost his edge in the battle when Green Arrow stuck an arrow in Deathstroke's missing eye. He still escaped with Dr. Light and has sworn revenge against Green Arrow and the League.

Deathstroke was a founding member of Alexander Luthor's Secret Society of Super-Villains during the events of Villains United. He participated in the group that ambushed the Freedom Fighters just outside of Metropolis; the battle didn't last long, and by the end Deathstroke had impaled Phantom Lady through the chest, calling his action "Just business."[2]

He is also currently the employer of a supposedly undercover Nightwing, whom he's hired to train his daughter Rose.

Deathstroke was the founder of Titans East. He made a deal with Inertia, providing the young speedster with Velocity 9 in exchange for joining the team.

He was one of the few villains significantly not deported to the Hell Planet during the events of Salvation Run.

Although The Society fell out after their failure in the Battle of Metropolis, it has recently been reformed by Libra during the events of Final Crisis.[3] Deathstroke has been seen amongst its ranks,[4] but does not appear to play a substantial role in it as he did in the previous incarnation.

Powers

Slade is enhanced due to a military procedure making him almost superhuman.

Enhanced Mind: Able to utilize 90% of his brain's potential capacity for information processing and sorting, Deathstroke's mind is virtually a computer built for strategy and problem-solving, one that works at optimal ability even when under stress and fatigue. Using his superior problem-solving skills, Deathstroke can work out a battle ahead of time in its infinite possibilities and predict enemy movements and tactics after the battle has engaged by recalling and utilizing memorized mannerisms acquired through past experience on a moment's notice. He is also ingenious in devising solutions against superior aspects of opponents, can observe and exploit, and can calculate distance, speed, and time at lightning speeds; his sense of timing is superb, bordering on perfection.

Enhanced Reflexes: The speed at which he reacts allows him to dodge fast-moving projectiles such as arrows and bullets

Enhanced Strength: His entire muscular system was hardened and strengthened, allowing Deathstroke to be as strong as 10 men. Thus makes him capable of pressing at least 800lbs.

Enhanced Endurance/Speed: Ability to run at speeds of up to 30mph and long distances far out-performing any Olympic athlete.

Flexibility: Tendons and ligaments have been simultaneously stretched and strengthened, allowing him incredible flexibility in addition to his ability to dismantle and reset his limbs.

Enhanced Senses: Deathstroke's senses have been augmented to higher levels of ability. He can hear, see, and smell things better then regular human senses.

  • Hearing: can hear things clearer and farther away than a normal human is capable of
  • Vision: Sees better then any athlete.

Regenerative Healing Factor: With an enhanced ability to repair damaged tissue, the rate at which Deathstroke's body recovers from injury has been substantially increased as well as the severity capable of being repaired before death. As such, Deathstroke's body can take a tremendous amount of punishment before succumbing to death. Simple gunshot and stab wounds, cuts, and broken bones can mend in minutes; mortal wounds that aren't immediately fatal can heal in hours. Deathstroke, however, can only repair limbs and organs, not regenerate them. If a limb or organ (such as an eye) is completely removed, it's gone for good.

  • Resistance: Deathstroke's regenerative abilities have some affect on his body's ability to process through harmful, foreign substances and he has become naturally resistant to deadly poisons and illnesses.
  • Retarded Aging: An important aspect to note is that while Deathstroke is apparently aging, he does so very slowly, appearing younger than he actually is. One revival actually caused a reversal of age, however, this has yet to be seen again and the affects were eventually reversed by another return from death.

Abilities

Masterful TacticianSlade is most likely the greatest strategist and tactician on the planet always calculating his opponents moves before hand he even single handedly defeated the entire JLA roster except for green arrow.he has been compared to batman in terms of tactical methods.Even against metahumans he has proved mre than a match for them all at once.

Expert Combatant: expertly trained in hand-to-hand combat. While Slade was in the Army, he received Martial Arts training thorught Boxing, Ju-Jitsu and Karate. After mastering these Martial arts He furthered his studies when he seeked an assassin known as Natas to train him in the ways of the Ninja and Assassination techniques after this he became the man known as Deathstroke.

Equipment

Amongst other things, Deathstroke has been shown to carry a specially designed multi-million dollar flash-bomb capable of incapacitating the entire Justice League, including Superman. Although not for very long, only long enough for him to make an escape.[5]

Weapons

Deathstroke meets Deadpool

Superman/Batman Annual #1

  • Similarities to Other Characters:
  • Deathstroke has been said to have been designed as a sort of Anti-Batman by creators Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, but with a much more James Bond feel to him. Despite the basic thematic similarities, it is also notable that Deathstroke's manservant Wintergreen is a clear nod to Alfred Pennyworth.
  • Marvel Comics' Deadpool clearly bares a lot of unmistakable similarities to Deathstroke; the two wear nearly identical costumes, although they have completely opposite attitudes. The two of them actually met during a Mr. Mxyzptlk-influenced crossover event, in which the two of them fought with conflicting contracts to both kill and save Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne.[6]
  • Deathstroke's origin, that of being indoctrinated with a form of super-serum by the army, is also incredibly similar to that of Marvel Comics' Captain America. Which is amusing, because whereas Captain America is immensely patriotic, Deathstroke is a purely international mercenary who has no qualms working for anybody if it feels right to him.
  • The character of "Snake Plissken" bears many similarities to Slade Wilson, at least in Slade's earlier years. Besides their similar names, they both have eyepatches and similar anti-heroic attitudes, as well as backgrounds involving fantastic military careers tarnished by turns to lives of illegal activities. Snake Plissken first appeared in the movie "Escape from New York," portrayed by Kurt Russell and directed by John Carpenter. Escape from New York was released less than a year after Deathstroke's first appearance in New Teen Titans #2. It is unknown if the two characters have any connection.
