John Lynch has been researching on the given intel of Grifter's gun from Holden Carver on Grifter's mind control. Marc Slayton enters his office and confides on whether he can repair Cole's mind, in which Lynch isn't sure until knows more.
Two days later. Lynch meets Holden at a parking garage. He needlessly thanks Holden for the information on Grifter, but is disappointed for allowing himself to compromised. Holden angrily retorts back, stating that ever since Lynch was shot he has been left in trouble and now inciting a chance to leave the Syndicate and owing a favor in saving Lynch's life. Lynch replies that many men were killed in making Tao believe that Grifter carried out the mission.
In a flashback, an explosion at the I.O. building makes it appear to be of Grifter's doing. I.O. agents then aimed their guns at Grifter and making an arrest on him. To Grifter, he thought that he is being turned against for no apparent reason. He retaliates and managed to kill everyone. Upon inspecting a dying I.O. agent he learns from him that it was Lynch's order to take him into custody. Lynch then probes Grifter's mind and make him remember everything for shooting Lynch.
In the present, Lynch recalls that Grifter is badly punishing himself for what he did. He then announces that he has moved up the timetable against Tao and asks Holden of how they are going to make it work. Holden replies that he knows...
Much later, Holden receives a phone call from Miss Misery about Grifter's (staged) actions and that according to sources Lynch was gravely wounded. She also mentions that Tao felt that the Syndicate's base is compromised, and decided to shut down and move the entire operation. Misery herself is tasked in bringing Holden to a new location in which she wants him to meet at the Brooklyn Safehouse.
While riding to Brooklyn on subway, Holden then realizes that all his troubles seem to have finally gone away. Upon arriving at the safehouse, he meets with Misery and the two make love. In the middle of intercourse, Peter Grimm creeps from the shadows and touches Holden, inducing him into having nightmares. Grimm tells Holden that after having known not to trust him, he reveals that Tao knows all too well that he would betray before allowing him to suffer more nightmares. At Misery's bequest, Grimm makes Holden be conscious, yet weak, to have him humiliated to witness Misery having sex with Grimm and all the while for Misery to sharply ridicule Holden for trusting her. After done having sex, Misery, incensed, viciously beats Holden for meekly calling out her real name and throws him out the building, landing him on a car before being taken away for Tao.
Meanwhile at I.O., Lynch meets a self-wallowing Grifter in his cell. He tells Grifter that he isn't the man he knew for being pitiful, and wants him to become someone for revenge; in which Lynch knows "how he can get it."
