Synopsis for Espionage: "Queen Mai of Xanxal"
While fighting a Japanese enemy, Rokuru, deep in Asia, Black X and Batu inadvertently cross the border of Xanxal, a "thrice forbidden kingdom." All three are captured by Xanxal border guards and presented to Queen Mai, who condemns them to execution for trespassing. Black X is the most impudent, so he goes first. They tie him to a post and he still fights his way free of them, disarms one, steals his sword, disarms another, and doesn't kill him. This makes a big impression on Queen Mai, and she postpones his execution. Batu and Rokuru meanwhile languish in a pillory in the prison courtyard. A mad elephant is herded into the yard, to trample them. Batu hypnotizes the elephant, which dismantles the pillory and places Batu on its back, and carries him to safety.
Rokoru teams up with Queen Mai's disillusioned Councillor, and some jealous Xanxal noblement, to overthrow her. They rally up a mob of Xanxal civilians to storm the palace. Mai returns Black X's handgun, and he kills some of the rioters, just before Batu, riding the formerly mad elephant, gallops onto the scene and routs the mob. Rokuru is killed by the elephant, and the surviving plotters are pardoned by Queen Mai. The Queen is quite smitten with Black X, who resists her charms and returns to the war. despite her bitter weeping, he and Batu leave Xanxal on foot, as they arrived..
