The Solomon Grundy of Earth-One was a weird mix of both the Solomon Grundy of Earth-Two and the Parasite of Earth-One that was encountered by both Superman and Batman.

While the original Solomon Grundy of Earth-Two was trapped in Slaughter Swamp, he crossed over into Earth-One by unknown means looking for his counterpart of that universe (who, unknown to him, did not yet exist); in doing so, he left behind residual cells.[1] Shortly afterward, the Parasite used an enhanced crystal called the Power Prism to metabolically hasten the growth of the residual cells left over in the sewers from the Earth-Two Solomon Grundy. The cells grew into the Earth-One Solomon Grundy, a newer and stronger version of the original.[2]

During his first clash with Superman,[3] it was determined that Grundy's might was too much for the Man of Steel, so Superman flew the monster to an alien world that was inhospitable to all save the hardiest life forms. There, under the planet's low gravity, Grundy was appeased when Superman gave him a copy of his cape to wear, after which the zombie propelled himself through the air, mimicking his one-time adversary.[4]

Grundy next plagued Superman in an encounter where multiple Grundys were spawned and Superman and the Swamp Thing both encountered the clones. Soon, Superman obtained a compound from S.T.A.R. Labs which caused the Grundys to become inert, in effect killing the seemingly unkillable man-things. The Swamp Thing attempted to cry out for Superman to stop, as he believed that the Grundys met the definition of life, but he was unable to express this due to his difficulty in speaking.[5] Meanwhile, the original Earth-Two Solomon Grundy continued to exist.

The Earth-One Grundy made one final appearance (how he had survived his previous encounter with Superman and the Swamp Thing was never revealed) where he battled Batman in Gotham City. He was apparently killed again by being tricked into walking into a furnace that Batman had already activated and then being consumed in the fire, but Batman seriously doubted that Grundy was really dead.[6]

Powers

  • This version of Solomon Grundy, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
