For the 1971 one-shot, see Spirit World Vol 1 1.

The Spirit World is the ephemeral realm of the afterlife. It bridges all realities, but is not intrinsically tied to any one specific reality. Whenever a sentient organism dies, their souls pass through the spirit world into the Afterlife. The afterlife may be different for all and is dependent upon the belief system of the individual.

History

The Spirit World is inhabited by displaced souls whom, for one reason or another, are restricted from passing on to their final reward. The spirit world is also occupied by various phantasms and spirit entities.

In the corporeal world, magic users, low-level psychics and mediums can communicate with those souls that reside within the spirit world, oftentimes, providing them with the means for escaping. One of the most renowned mediums is the mysterious Madame Xanadu.

The displaced spirit known as Deadman can freely traverse the spirit world, but usually prefers taking residence within the body of a living human being.

Some powerful mystics possess the abiilty to tear a soul free from a living form and casting it into the spirit world. These rituals, often violent in nature, are commonly used by dark magicians.

People from Native American culture have extremely strong ties to the spirit world and can often conduct rituals to communicate with those on the other side. This also includes animal spirits who are held in very high regard in Native American society.

Notes

  • In one alternate reality, people were able to access the spirit world by way of a narcotic known as Ghostdancing.
