Synopsis for Robin: "Murder on the Chess Board"
Robin is the guest of honor at a Gotham city restaurant called the Queens Gambit. He is asked if he has ever experienced a case with a perfect murder. Robin begins to recount the story of John Castle and Fred Knight. The two men open a restaurant with a chess theme due to their last names. The partnership seemed to be good and successful but John Castle turns out to be an embezzler that is siphoning money from the partnership. He is confronted by his partner Fred Knight and Castle murders him aboard his Yacht. Once he returns to shore, Castle drags the dead body back to Knights home and sets up a murder scenario where it looks like Knight got hit on the head by a falling blunt object on a shelf. Castle then notifies the authorities to let them know that he has found his dead partner. Robin is in attendance as. Astoe explains how he found the dead body. The situation seems to be an open and shut case of accidental death. The police determine that Knight has been dead for at least 48 hours-when Robin notices a telltale clue. Knight is wearing a watch which indicates the correct time of 10:45. It turns out that the watch is self winding. The wearers movement winds the watch. The time on the watch would have stopped if Knight had been dead for 48 hours. At this point Castle panicks and starts to flee. At one point Castle turns around to point a gun at the authorities but he unknowingly stands underneath a shelf holding two large heavy chess pieces as they fall on top of his head. He is ironically knocked out in the same manner as the death he had staged for his partner. Castle is eventually executed for his crime and his nephew now runs the restaurant.
