"Steel Maxum" was the stage name of a man who briefly served as Doctor Fate.
History
One day while jogging, the young man came into contact with Nabu, the ancient Lord of Order. Believing he was literally looking into the face of God, the young man didn't know WHAT to do. As it turned out, Nabu was looking to hire a new Doctor Fate, though why he chose this particular mortal is anyone's guess (although the man assumed it was because of his physique, stamina, and the fact that he once took an amateur magic class). Accepting the cosmic being's offer, the man threw himself into his new role as a supernatural superhero, and thoroughly enjoyed the perks of the job, including having the Tower of Fate as a rent-free place to live.
While he did have to occasionally fight off some demonic incursion or other such supernatural threat, most of his spare time was spent simply dusting off the sizable collection of magical artifacts Nabu and the previous Doctors Fate had collected over the centuries. Weirdest of all was a shiny black card with the writing "Get out of Hell free" on it. Curious, he combed through Nabu's books and discovered that the card had the power to allow one, upon his or her death, to evade Hell and enter Heaven, however the card could only be used once before it is left useless to anyone else.
For two months the man has held the gig of Doctor Fate before he started to get bored. Looking for some fun, he visited a bar one evening and met a tall, voluptuous redheaded woman whom he promptly hit on with a corny pick-up line. Easy enough, she came on to him and was invited to the Tower of Fate along with her tomboyish brunette girlfriend to whom the man was not interested in. At first he scored a kiss from the redhead, but as he made out with her the man grew suspicious of her girlfriend who did not take part in the love-making. It did not take long for the womanizer to find out that the brunette was stealing the magic card and caught her in the act. When she unsheathed her wrist blades, he saw the Helmet of Fate from across the room and made a break for it, and subdued her by knocking over a display case containing a squid like entity that wrapped her in its tentacles, giving him time to grab Nabu's helmet. But then as he was about to don the Helmet, the redheaded woman sneaked up and yanked the helmet from behind him and shoved him against the wall, knocking the man out along with a curtain dropping on his head.
He woke up the following morning to find that the two women have absconded the card, but left all of the other artifacts unscathed. The moment he came to, Nabu appeared before him, enraged at his recklessness and allowing trespassers to steal the card. Before the man could explain himself, Nabu ejected him from the Tower and stripped him of his otherworldly powers as the place disappeared to another dimension. A couple of days after his rejection, he called up his girlfriend, who was freaking out because people from the government were tracking him down in search of Nabu's magic card. After his girlfriend shut him out he called up his side-chick, who also brushed him off. With no other options, he changed his legal name and found work as a male stripper under the stage name "Steel Maxum" as a way of hiding in plain sight.
He was later found by the Suicide Squad in a strip club, taken to the woods and on the run from Zoom, and roasted marshmallows with them while he told them his origin of how he became Doctor Fate, and how the two women (whom Deadshot recognized as Scandal Savage and Knockout) robbed him off the card. Afterwards while on the road, he got kicked out of the vehicle by the Task Force X team, as he was no longer of any use to them and was left stranded in the middle of nowhere half-naked. He was later about to be arrested by a patrolling police officer on the freeway, but Zoom and his goons found Maxum, who was powerless and alone, then kidnapped him. His fate remains unknown.
