Synopsis for Adam Strange: "Challenge of the Rival Spaceman"

This story is reprinted from Mystery in Space #76.

While waiting for the next Zeta-Beam at the Iguazu Falls in Brazil, Adam Strange notices an alien creature watching him. Before he can react to it's appearance he is struck by the Zeta-Beam and is transported to Rann, where he is reunited with Alanna. The two happen to spot the same alien waiting for Adam on Rann. As Adam explains that he saw the creature on Earth before arriving on Rann, it disappears quickly. Alanna then takes Adam to the Festival of Dyalina taking place in Ranagar. Alanna explains that the Festival of Dyalina is a celebration of a legend that five thousand years ago a warrior named Pagathann defeated a tyrant and led his people to freedom where they built what is now Ranagar.

While participating in one of the festivals events, Adam and Alanna are interrupted once again by the appearance of the strange alien, which once again quickly disappears when Adam tries to grab it. That night, Adam is visited in his sleep by the creature that explains that it is Xanthos, co-champion of the planet Mizlar, a title he shares with fellow champion Yarnak. He explains that the two have been fighting for a long time without a clear victor, hearing that Adam Strange was the undefeated champion on the planet Rann, he hoped to learn from Adam so that he may learn how to defeat Yarnak. He them subliminally instructs that he will fake three dangers, one by animal, nature and intelligent life, which Adam would then have to defeat.

The next day, Adam and Alanna go to the Gorge of Chrystar where they are attacked by gigantic alien bird while in the Valley of Summaru. Realizing that his ray gun does not effect it, he stops the creature by tangling it up in vines. Next they are trapped within a cave at the gorge, and Adam floods it so that the cold temperature will freeze the water. Protected by their insulated space-suits, they wait for the expanding ice to push them free and wait for the warm sun to melt them free. Next Xanthos uses his own alien devices to try and best Adam, who uses his knowledge of science to defeat each trap: A number of giant globes using physics, a magnetic cloud using the "Curie Point" method to demagnetize it, and finally determining which was a hologram of Xanthos and which was the real thing.

With Xanthos defeated, Adam explains that the reason he is being defeated is because he doesn't use his most important weapon of all: his brain. He thanks Adam for the lesson and just then the Zeta-Beam wears off sending Adam back home to Earth. Alanna asks Xanthos how Adam was able to figure out which Xanthos was the real one, Xanthos explains that Adam motioned him into facing the sun and he gave himself away by squinting. With the explanation made, Xanthos then leaves Rann to challange Yarnak once more.
