Synopsis for "Probability Zero"
A thief by the name of Brantz pulls off a $40,000 theft from an office safe. He escapes in his car but comes upon a toll booth that is blocked by police. Brantz panics and confesses that he has the money in the trunk. The police are puzzled by his statement. They were merely pulling him over to congratulate him for being the millionth person across the bridge. He was captured by pure chance. Brantz is sentenced to 10 years in jail but gets paroled for good behavior. While in prison he studies Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He uses his knowledge to invent a probability machine that changes the odds of something happening so that they work in his favor. The machine is shaped like a pocket watch and he uses it to pull off an armored car heist. As he escapes, he uses the machine to bring down the probability that he will be struck by bullets. He further uses the machine to take advantage of a casino as he piles on the winnings. Brantz continues to manipulate his luck until he becomes a very rich man. At one point he asks the machine what the probability would be of him becoming a world dictator. The machine suddenly becomes sentient and it tells Brantz that it would be wrong for him to become a dictator. The probability machine then manipulates the air molecules around Brantz so that he collapses from a lack of oxygen. The pocketwatch machine then destroys itself by falling over a desk which smashes it into several small pieces as Brantz lays dead on the floor.
