Synopsis for "Debate"

The Synnar facet of the Weird's psyche argues that his power was stolen by the Weird. The older Captain Comet argues that Synnar's power would be used to against the supreme one which disqualifies him from having a say in this debate among the other facets. Xaltoon slightly concurs with the older Captain Comet by saying that the fates have given Synnar's might to the Weird for a special purpose. Synnar interjects by saying that the Weird's temperament and lack of experience in these cosmic matters render him unfit to harness Synnar's power. The older Captain Comet fights back by saying Synnar's power in the Weird's hands can be used to recreate what has been destroyed. The younger Comet interrupts by saying the older version of himself is a stubborn and a self-assured fool who thought he could fix any problem in his past which inevitably got him killed in the first place.

The older Comet points out to the rest of them that his younger self is a prime example of what the Weird can do with Synnar's power. The younger Comet says the Weird is a lunatic who is playing with near omnipotent power. The older Comet says that once a consensus is reached they will make the universe a fit place to live where the good will prosper and evil will be snuffed out. Younger Comet mocks his older self by asking him if he will be the one to make those calls of who lives and dies in the Weird's utopia. The older Comet doesn't view himself as a racially biased individual like the Nazis but the younger Comet remembers the suppressed rage of his older self. The older Comet insults his younger counterpart by saying that he has channeled his rage into self-interest and cowardice.

The younger Comet considers himself more pragmatic since his resurrection. The older Comet views his younger self as the kind of person who will forsake the responsibilities given to him with the power he wields and will choose to flee when the situation becomes too dangerous. Both Comets engage in a physical and telepathic fight with one another. With the Comets fighting among themselves, Walter Langley takes advantage of the situation by suggesting to Adam and the other facets to go to the Conscience Center thereby coming to an agreement on their debate. Adam looks at the two combative Comets and figured they picked the wrong time to work out their personal but oedipal issues.

Adam tries to figure out who is divided between retaining and returning Synnar's power. Walter feels that such power can be a curse that corrupts its wielder. Gaidoor feels the others lack the courage to justly exploit Synnar's power. He believes a new tomorrow could be fashioned for the universe where tyrants fall, natural disasters are controlled, the hungry are fed and greed no longer exists. Xaltoon considers Synnar's self-interests in this debate to be irrelevant. The decision is evenly split between Gaidoor, Xaltoon and the older Comet who want to wield Synnar's power while Zarolatt, Synnar and Walter want to return this power to Synnar. With no consensus, Adam angrily accuses the Weird of being insane because his democratic forum has chosen do nothing about the devouring of stars with no actual guarantee that they can remake what they have destroyed.

The Comets continue to quibble with one another as they fight. The older Comet can't understand how his younger resurrected self could have become a sorry excuse for a human being. The younger Comet explains that a piece of him is the older Comet but the other half is part of the Weird. After his resurrection, the younger Comet became his own man and made new choices in life. The younger Comet admits that his older self was driven by doing what was right rather than his ego but he can't ignore the fact that his older self is becoming a deluded and self-righteous dictator within the Weird's psyche. The older Comet simply wants to bring order to the universe. The younger Comet points out that one can never truly achieve absolute order in the universe especially with the Weird leading the cause. The Weird is a cosmic loose cannon who is divided by different personalities. The Weird's attempt to save the universe will actually lead to its destruction.

The older Comet heeds the point of view of his younger self and decides to change his vote. The personalities of the Weird bid farewell to Adam and Comet as they exit the Weird's psyche. The broken personalities of the Weird chant a mantra that makes the Weird whole again and causes him to relinquish Synnar's power. On the outside, the Weird/ Synnar senses that Comet and Adam have failed to reason with the Weird. Synnar watches as all that he has created in his grand design begins to disappear because of a crazed fool like the Weird. The dark zone begins to erupt with all of the stars that the eyes of the Weird devoured.

Eye tries to teleport everyone with Adam's zeta beam wrist band but Gavyn's astral power disrupts the device. The Weird/ Synnar tells the two of them that the bodies of Adam and Comet cannot be moved or they run the risk of their consciousness dying because they can't find their hosts. Suddenly, Adam and Comet awaken as the eyes of the Weird begin to fade away from the dark zone. The Weird regains control of his body and the dark zone becomes a glimmering dimension. The meteor that they were all standing on becomes a floating base in the shape of a six-pointed star.
