The Stymphalian Birds are terrible man-eating birds with metallic feathers from Greek mythology.

History

Earth-One

During a strange time travel to a past different from that known in history and mythology, Superman made a Stymphalian Bird of stone shale and twisted boughs so that Hercules could "kill" it and thus fulfill one of his famous Labours for the King of Thebes.[1]

Prime Earth

The man-eating Stymphalian Birds are mechanical birds with metallic feathers created by Ares, the God of War, as his pets. When Queen Diana (Wonder Woman) became the new God of War in place of Ares, the birds were drawn by her as their new master to Themyscira, attacking the Amazons.[2]

Among the divine artifacts guarded by the Amazons are the Stymphalian Wings. Hewn from the tendons and feathers of the Stymphalian Birds, they grant their user speed and flight.[3]

Notes

  • This character or object is an adaptation of Stymphalian Birds, a character or object in traditional stories. These include, but may not be limited to religious texts, myth, and/or folk lore. More information on the original can be found at Wikipedia.org.
  • It seems that the presence of the Stymphalian Birds in the Amazon Island also makes reference to the Birds of Ares, a flock of feather-dart-dropping birds that guarded the Amazons' shrine of the god.
