Suicide Squad #17 is an issue of the series Suicide Squad (Volume 1) with a cover date of September, 1988.

Synopsis for "Battleground Manhattan"

The international terrorist group Jihad launches an attack on New York City, striking at key points throughout Manhattan, in retaliation for the Suicide Squad's attack on Jotunheim. Their leader Rustam sends a public message to the U.S. government to turn over the Suicide Squad to Qurac for their summary execution, or the Jihad will continue their attacks until their demands are met.

Amanda Waller orders the Squad to not engage the Jihad and return to Belle Reve as any action would expose Task Force X's existence. However, Flag and Bronze Tiger refuse to obey Waller's orders, which she reluctantly concedes before telling them to "do it right this time!"

While Flag lays out the Squad's plans, Waller realizes that since the Jihad are in Manhattan, Jotunheim is likely to be lightly guarded. Seeing an opportunity, Waller calls Harry Stein of Checkmate to have his organization dig up any and all dirt on Derek Tolliver and Senator Joseph Cray—Checkmate is the only spy organization that Tolliver knows nothing about, thus giving Waller enough time to escape from Tolliver's blackmail.

Nightshade has finally recuperated from her ordeal and dons a new costume. She requests Waller to send her back to the Squad to stop the Jihad in which the director obliges. Shortly thereafter, Waller gets a call from Tolliver, who announces that it is time for her help to re-elect Senator Cray.
