Suicide Squad (Volume 3) #2 is an issue of the series Suicide Squad (Volume 3) with a cover date of December, 2007.

Synopsis for "Weapons"

Rick Flag wakes up befuddled in a mysterious land, and kills a velociraptor that is about to eat him. He last remembers dueling with Rustam before the explosion at Jotunheim. Rustam apparently used his flaming scimitar to open a portal through space and time, flinging them both to relative safety. The two men landed separately, but they quickly meet and agree to set aside their differences for survival. Rustam explains that his scimitar is out of power. He believes it took them to its place of origin, Skartaris, which he knows only through carvings in ancient ruins.

Meanwhile back at Belle Reve, Amanda Waller shows Bronze Tiger a VHS tape of Flag at Jotunheim confirming his death. Waller is furious that General Eiling had this evidence before sending them into an ambush.[1] She is unable to prove this but says that Eiling will regret playing games with her.

Lost in the jungle, Flag recalls the deaths of his original Suicide Squad: Caetano, Dutchman, Vega, Vracek. They were a black-ops team assembled by Eiling, who sent them to die on a cartel assassination attempt that he felt needed to look real. Following this incident, Eiling put Flag in charge of a public Suicide Squad with "two scientists and a medic.[2]

Flag and Rustam are attacked by a pterodactyl, and Flag manages to successfully wield the flaming scimitar against it. Rustam remarks that it has never ignited for anyone else besides him before and takes it back, out of power again. They stumble across a structure that looks like manmade ruins, a temple or palace, and decide to enter. Glowing eyes watch them menacingly from the shadows.

Notes

  • This issue opens with an ambiguous dream sequence / flashback where Rick Flag (Richard Rogers Flag) talks to Wade Eiling. Flag refers to the Suicide Squadron as "my grandfather's outfit in World War II and Korea." This is relevant to Flag's muddled continuity.

Trivia

  • Eiling says the phrase "Dies irae" a medieval Latin poem that roughly translates to "day of wrath."
