Superboy (Volume 4) #55 is an issue of the series Superboy (Volume 4) with a cover date of September, 1998.

Synopsis for "Hexed!"

Superboy and the supermodel, Hex, try to catch their breath after being attacked by Grokk the Living Gargoyle. Unfortunately, the monstrous stone dragon attacks them again and it is relentless.

Director Alpha reports back to a safe out, communicating to Director Beta that he failed to destroy his creation, that being Grokk the Living Gargoyle. Beta says that he has become a liability and orders her squad of cloned soldiers to gun him down. She then orders her soldiers to attack both Superboy and the gargoyle, if for nothing else to give her an easy excuse for the death of Alpha. When Hex stops one of the soldiers from shooting the Kid, he responds by slashing her face with his knife. Dubbilex gets a psychic flash, but for some reason he saw Superboy instead of Hex. He and Guardian head straight for the battlefield.

Hex is cornered again by the thug, but Grokk the Living Gargoyle swoops down and crunches him. Then it looks at Hex, but makes no hostile move towards her. Superboy, however, doesn't give it time to think again, and resumes his fight with the beast. As the rest of the clone soldiers get in position to shoot down both Boy and beast, a strange transformation undergoes Hex--she starts speaking in a heavy southern drawl and (fetching up a nearby gun) is suddenly able to "shoot the fleas off a dog's back." Superboy is dumbfounded -- for about four seconds, then he gets hammered by Grokk the Living Gargoyle again. While "Jonah" Hex teams up with Guardian to take down the clone soldiers, Superboy manages to bring down the beast.

Guardian finds it strange that Hex changed that she did--and that she was firing a gun that didn't even have a clip in it! After Dubbilex telepathically shuts down Grokk the Living Gargoyle, Guardian offers Superboy the position as full time field agent for Cadmus, which he accepts.

At the Agenda headquarters, Amanda Spence talks to Beta, who is really the Contessa Erica Alexandra del Portenza -- and formally Mrs. Lex Luthor. Across the Atlantic, Cadmus itself gets news that "the mechanic" is being sent in to take control of the Cadmus Project.
