Supergirl (Volume 5) #36 is an issue of the series Supergirl (Volume 5) with a cover date of February, 2009. It was published on December 17, 2008.

Synopsis for "New Krypton (Part VIII of X) - Death in the House of El"

Zor-El falls as Reactron stands hovering in triumph above him. Upon seeing her father fatally wounded, Supergirl rushes to his side, followed closely by his cousin who doesn't want to let some android take advantage of her distraught emotions to kill her too. Supergirl bashes and blasts her way through several Brainiac Probes and kneels beside her father. Zor-El has time to tell her he's happy to have gotten the chance to see her again and she must watch out for her mother before dying. Kara mourns her father as Superman and Thara deduce that the android riot was a distraction to allow Metallo and Reactron to murder Zor-El, and the fact they have run away via a tunnel proves both villains were aided by an insider. Right then Alura arrives, hugs her dead husband and sobs that they should have never come there.

News of Zor-El's death spread across the planet. In Metropolis, Cat Grant cannot wait to launch another libelous piece against Supergirl, blaming the Metropolis' cops' killings on her. When Lana Lang warns Cat to leave Supergirl alone now her father got killed, Cat indifferently states that Supergirl should begin looking for a good lawyer.

Funeral services are held for Zor-El. His widow, Alura, provides the eulogy. She talks about Zor-El's good actions and his determined, kind spirit; but she also rails against mankind, stating Terrans have threatened them and attemped to kill them and shouldn't be shocked if Kryptonians respond in kind.

Her words get Superman and Supergirl deeply alarmed. After the service, Kara and Kal try to reassure and comfort each other. Kara tells her cousin she's moving to Kandor because her mother needs her, and wonders whether she's somehow responsible for her father's death. Kal gainsays her, stating that putting all his rogues in the same place was a terrible idea and he's worried that other Kryptonians use Alura's words as an excuse to resort to violence. Alura walks in to question why shouldn't they. She blames all of mankind for her husband's murder, and Superman and Supergirl for failing to keep their enemies under control. Kara gets mad and flies off.

Far away Supergirl bumps into a flying woman wearing a mask and a costume with a "S" emblazoned on the chest. The woman identifies herself as Superwoman and tries to reassure Kara: Alura is wrong, but loss and anger lead people to commit horrible actions.

Meanwhile, Nightwing and Flamebird keep tracking down Zod's agents and discover Alura's security team has blueprints to the White House. And Alura meets with a squad of Zod's followers.

Supergirl and Superwoman fly their way to the Daily Planet's rooftop. Supergirl asks why Superwoman wears that suit and a mask impervious to her X-Ray vision. Superwoman replies she's been "inspired" by both Kryptonian cousins and everyone has secrets to keep, but she would like to be Kara's friend.

Afterwards, Superwoman flies off with a grim expression upon her face.
