Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #42 is an issue of the series Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (Volume 1) with a cover date of January, 1960.

Synopsis for "The Big Superman Movie!"

Jimmy is off to Hollywood for a meeting with Mammoth Studios in order to negotiate making a film based on Jimmy's adventures with Superman. On the flight to Hollywood, Jimmy tells Lucy Lane the good news and she agrees to accompany him when she's off duty. With big dreams of stardom, Jimmy is accepts the deal and while he is having photos taken of himself, he's told that he won't be starring in the movie, but actor Cecil Hathaway will be performing in his place, much to Jimmy's chagrin. However, Jimmy is more than happy to accept the role of director on the film, and tells the studio that Superman has agreed to appear in the film, and gives Cecil his signal watch whenever they need to call Superman for a scene.

The next day, Jimmy and Cecil make both Superman and Lucy Lane do a double take once make-up has finished transforming Cecil to look like Jimmy. With Lucy on the set, Jimmy brags about how much more important his role is in the film, just after he has to handle the indignity of being Cecil's stand-in before each take.

The first scene shot is a reenactment of how Jimmy botched trying to capture a crook who is escaping on a motorcycle, however instead of calling Superman like the script asked, Cecil inflates a tire to get across a lake and capture the crook. When asked why he went off script, Cecil tells Jimmy that the audience would find it more believable that way. Throughout the shoot Cecil continues to avoid calling Superman and does something else that show how Jimmy could have gotten out of different fixes without calling Superman.

Much later, a gorilla busts loose from its cage and starts terrorizing the movie studio. With no way of stopping the rampaging beast, Lucy begs Cecil to call Superman. Jimmy then fesses up that he lost his signal watch a number of days ago and gave Cecil a fake and the whole time Cecil's "showing-up" of Jimmy was done in order to avoid having to tell Superman that he lost his watch. However, Cecil activates the watch and it works, and as Superman saves the day Cecil explains that he found the watch in the pocket of some clothing that Jimmy gave to the wardrobe department.

Synopsis for "Perry White, Cub Reporter!"

The Daily Planet staff are celebrating Perry White's birthday, and during the festivities Perry's wife points out that Perry needs to lose some weight. As a birthday wish, Perry decides to let Jimmy Olsen be editor for the day while he becomes a cub reporter. When they exchange desks, Jimmy accidentally opens one of Perry's letters from a life insurance company.

As soon as Jimmy is in charge of the paper he gives all the reporters great stories to cover, while he sends Perry to snap photos of Metropolis Harbor from the top of the Statue of Freedom. With no elevator, Perry is stuck huffing up 46 flights of stairs. Jimmy continues to assign Perry to grueling tasks, each time using his leverage as an editor to force Perry into taking on assignments. Perry ends up having to row out to an island owned by rich eccentric Hubert Van Klyk, riding a centrifugal force machine, and being left to hike miles to watch a missile test when Superman (who is carrying Perry to the location) suddenly has to leave on an emergency.

When the day is over and Perry is restored to his former position, he learns the real reason why Jimmy and the others were making him work so hard: So that he lost enough weight in order to pass his life insurance medical exam.

Synopsis for "Jimmy the Genie"

Superman takes Jimmy Olsen out into the Arabian desert where he uncovers an ancient tomb with his super-breath. Finding a cache in ancient artifacts, Superman takes them all back to Metropolis so that Jimmy can write up a scoop on them. When Jimmy is suddenly struck with a tooth ache he wishes that he could stop the pain. To his surprise one of the lamps that he brought back from the desert is really a magic lamp containing a genie within that promises to grant him whatever wishes he wants.

The genie when freed from his lamp cures Jimmy of his tooth ache, compels Lucy Lane to call and make a date with Jimmy, create a giant ice cream sundae and lastly reveal who is the leader of the Ghost Gang. When Jimmy is shown that it's Perry White's friend, prominent banker J.B. Hayes, Jimmy remarks how the news would "kill" Perry. Upon uttering the word "kill" Jimmy and the genie suddenly swap places. The former genie explains that because Jimmy said that word they switched places, freeing the genie from centuries of slavery and making Jimmy a slave to the genie's bidding.

The genie then has Jimmy do his bidding, however Jimmy decides to interpret the wishes in his own way, so when the genie wishes for riches, Jimmy rains down a shower of silver coins. When the genie orders Jimmy to attack Superman, it tips the Man of Steel off to the situation so that when Jimmy is ordered to turn into Kryptonite and kill Superman it is in reality a Superman Robot, although Jimmy doesn't know it.

Jimmy finally tricks the genie into saying the word "kill" by having him pick between three movies to watch: Frankenstein, Dracula, or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In reading the title to Dr. Jekyll the genie enunciates the word "kill" and swaps places back with Jimmy. Superman arrives and reveals that he caught onto the genie's scheme and sent a robot in his place. With the genie's plans thwarted, Jimmy sends him back into his lamp and places it in his souvenir collection to never be used again.
