Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #37 is an issue of the series Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (Volume 1) with a cover date of June, 1959.

Synopsis for "Superman's Super-Rival!"

While out in the Flying Newsroom, Jimmy loses control and is about to fly into the Superman Lighthouse when suddenly a strange bandaged figure moves it out of his path. Regaining control of the flying newsroom, Jimmy meets his savior, a being calling itself Mysterio. When Superman arrives due to Jimmy's signal watch, he tries to learn the identity of Mysterio but learns that the bandages are coated in lead, preventing his x-ray vision from learning his true identity. Mysterio then flies off leaving the two to ponder who Mysterio really is.

As Superman works in his Fortress of Solitude to try and learn the mystery of Mysterio's identity, Jimmy is visited by Mysterio in his apartment. Mysterio offers to be a better pal to Jimmy than Superman could ever be, asking Jimmy to exchange is signal watch for a golden sonic whistle that will call Mysterio instead. When Mysterio writes down a better reason for Jimmy to be his pal over Superman on a piece of lead, Jimmy agrees to exchange pals.

The next day when Jimmy is covering the new Metropolis Planetarium, the scale models of the solar system are falling down and threatening to crush Jimmy, Jimmy calls in Mysterio who save Jimmy's life. When Superman arrives shortly thereafter, Jimmy gives Superman back his signal watch and tells him that he's decided to be pals with Mysterio instead. Superman decides that he's not going to give up Jimmy's friendship without a fight and attacks Mysterio. When Mysterio proves unable to fight back, the mystery being uses x-ray vision to blast an obelisk and flies away while Superman is preventing it from toppling over.

Afterward, Jimmy explains that he became "pals" with Mysterio to learn what his identity and agenda was. When Mysterio arrives at Jimmy's apartment later, Jimmy tries to give back the whistle, not wanting anymore to do with the mystery being. However, Mysterio reveals his true identity: A single surviving Superboy robot that Superman did not destroy due to the fact that it could think on its own and simply deactivated it. In recent years it was reactivated by accident by a mole and went out to seek friendship. After seeing Superman out with Jimmy Olsen, it decided that it was going to become Jimmy's pal, and orchestrated the entire Mysterio identity to try and win Jimmy over without Superman learning the robot's true identity. He then offers Jimmy a fortune worth of diamonds to leave Metropolis and allow him to take Jimmy's place as Superman's pal.

Jimmy accepts and the Superboy robot disguises himself as Jimmy and goes to meet Superman. At first the robot believes that Superman has been fooled, however Superman sees through the disguise and tricks the robot into exposing itself by pretending to be trapped under a large chunk of Green Kryptonite. When the robot uses its superior strength to save Superman's life, the Man of Steel explains that he learned of the robots identity during the battle at the planetarium. Superman then decides to reward the robot by rebuilding it in an adult body so that it can operate as one of his Superman robots.

Synopsis for "The Jimmy Olsen Signal-Watch!"

As a gift for her birthday, Jimmy Olsen gives Lucy Lane her very own signal watch which would alert Jimmy whenever she needs him. Later that day, Jimmy is entertaining his fan club by displaying the various costumes that he's worn in his adventures with Superman.

When dressed up in a caveman's loin cloth Jimmy tells a tale about his discovery of a lost valley complete with cave people and a fire breathing dragon and how he called Superman in to help. As he finishes the tale, Jimmy gets a call on his signal watch from Lucy. Jimmy rushes across the city in his caveman outfit to learn that all Lucy wanted was to get him to teach some children to kick a football. The bare-footed Jimmy completely fails at the task and Lucy walks away in a huff, telling Jimmy that he's embarrassed them both.

Returning to his fan club, Jimmy changes into a devil costume he wore during Mardi Gras, he explains the during that escapade, there was a fire that would break out and Jimmy would summon Superman to put it out. Once again, Jimmy is called by Lucy and rushes off to meet her in costume. There he finds that Lucy's uncle is showing off a new inflatable raft to airline officials. During the demonstration Jimmy accidentally loses his footing and the pitch-fork from his costume punctures a hole in the raft, sending Jimmy, Lucy and her uncle into the water and spoiling the business deal.

Returning back to his club, Jimmy puts on a suit of armor that Jimmy worse to protect himself from armed robbers who were trying to steal some royal crystal wear until Superman could show up. Once again, Jimmy is called by Lucy who wants him to be the model in a photo shoot that advertises her airline company. When Jimmy finds himself stuck in the suit of armor, Lucy has to settle with the hired model. Fed up with the signal watch, Lucy gives it back and cancels their date for the night.

However, that evening she changes her mind and asks Jimmy to come out to a costume ball. When he arrives, he is so fed up with wearing costumes, he decides to come dressed as himself.

Synopsis for "The Elastic Lad of Metropolis!"

Jimmy, Perry, Lois and Clark are rehearsing a play called "Woo-Woo Wooing of Hocapontas!" for the Daily Planet's annual varieties show. During the rehearsal Lois gives Jimmy and Clark a drink out of a bottle from Jimmy's desk. After the rehearsal, Jimmy is shocked to find that his body is now mailable as an elastic, much to the surprise of everyone.

Suddenly, Professor Potter enters the room and explains that Jimmy must have drank the bottle of a synthetic serum that he made that makes people elastic. When Lois points out that Clark hasn't been effected by the serum, the Professor wishes to examine Clark. Clark deflects the question and ducks out of the office quickly so that he can change into Superman and make his appearance at the Metropolis ballpark to put on a pre-game exhibit to entertain the crowd.

Surprisingly, Jimmy has shown up wearing an "Elastic Lad" costume and grabs a ball that Superman has knocked out of the park. When Superman meets up with Jimmy he agrees to let the boy show off his new elastic powers. Jimmy next agrees to help test out a new cannon and is accidentally launched in an experimental rocket. The speed of the rocket causes Jimmy to pass out, but he is unharmed when the rocket crashes. Jimmy wakes up and finds himself far away from Metropolis and begins his long walk back into town.

When he runs into some cowboys, they think he's an alien and try to capture him, however Jimmy uses his stretching powers to escape from them. Returning to Metropolis, Jimmy pays a visit to Professor Potter to discuss why Clark had avoided an x-ray. Potter theorizes that Clark's immunity to the serum could mean that he is really Superman. However they are called outside by Clark who apparently has manifested the ability to stretch. In reality, Clark has created a gigantic mirror that has warped his image to create the illusion that he's stretched his body, so that later when the serums effects wear off on Jimmy nobody suspects that Clark is really Superman.
