Synopsis for "Torment (Part II of VI) - Crack-Up"

Kryptonite stalagmites begin growing upward and engulf Metropolis. Superman races to save as many people as possible, but his powers are greatly weakened from the deadly element.

Suddenly, Clark Kent awakens inside his bed. The entire debacle was nothing more than an intense nightmare. Lois greets him, and tells him that she has appointment to interview Pete Ross. Clark goes to the office, but he cannot concentrate on his work. Feelings of intense jealousy pound inside his brain and he leaves the office.

Meanwhile, Batman and Commissioner Gordon monitor Killer Croc at Arkham Asylum. Batman deduces that Croc is actually subservient to another - someone whose presence appears to be all around him though he cannot be seen.

Elsewhere, an old man meets with someone named John in an underground lair. They analyze a glowing crystal that is in fact a powerful transmitter. This cube is responsible for tapping into Superman's primal fear, thus producing his nightmares and feelings of jealousy.

Clark meanwhile, races blindly through the streets of Metropolis. As paranoia grips him, he spies Lois inside a restaurant with Pete Ross. He then sees a fuel truck spiraling out of control and with little thought towards maintaining his secret identity, hoists the truck into the air where it explodes.

The mysterious old man reveals himself to be DeSaad in disguise and he returns to his native world Apokolips. Darkseid enters DeSaad's laboratory and falls down the steps landing on his face. From nearby, Bekka, the wife of Orion, watches with great interest.

Back on Earth, the Scarecrow and a pack of war hounds plague Superman's mind.
