Synopsis for Superdoom, Chapter 3: "The Promise"
Near Mars, Superman battles the Cyborg Superman, as the Brainiac invasion fleet approaches Earth. However, the fight is merely a distraction meant to keep Superman from stopping the fleet's progress, and by the time he realizes it, he's too late.
Meanwhile, in a Justice League Emergency Bunker, the League assesses the situation. When Cyborg attempts to look into the invading ships, his circuits are fried. Soon, they receive a message from Steel and Lana Lang warning of the fleet's approach, and the Collector's involvement. Lana noticed that the the ships are deploying in a pattern; a set of notes meant to boost the signal that took out Smallville and Metropolis. They are trying to shut down the entire planet at once. If they can destroy 36% of the nodes, they won't be able to cover the entire planet, and the signal will degrade.
When they learn that Superman is on his way back to Earth, the League is apprehensive. Batman warns that with the Kryptonite cloud surrounding the planet, Superman won't be powerful enough to resist the Doomsday virus, and everyone will die.
Clark knows that it's true, and he can feel the virus in him urging him to go back and give himself over to the violence. Clark believes he can handle it all the same, but as soon as he enters the Earth's atmosphere, he collapses from Kryptonite poisoning, and Doomsday takes over.
In Cambodia, Hawkman and Green Lantern are struggling to keep back the ships when Superman slams down, destroying several in one blow. Hoping for help, Hawkman soon realizes that this is more Doomsday than Superman and warns everyone else of the danger he presents.
Wonder Woman warns that Batman needs to find a way to get rid of the Kryptonite cloud, and he responds that if he fails, she will have to find a way to put Superman down. In the meantime, Cyborg attempts to coordinate the attack against the nodes all over the world, but it's not working fast enough.
In space, Lana watches the Cyborg Superman building something, and wonders what it could be. Though he knows he will be outmatched, Steel decides to investigate alone.
In Romania, Clark feels Doomsday wanting to destroy an innocent village, and even with Kryptonite poisoning, he attempts to stand his ground and fight the virus' will. Fortunately Wonder Woman intervenes, knocking Doomsday far from the village, warning Batman to hurry up his plan. Wonder Woman pleads with Superman to leave Earth, with reports coming in that her troops may be able to fight off the fleet. She begs him not to become just another monster she has to destroy.
When Steel confronts the Cyborg Superman, he takes a violent blast, knowing he cannot survive another. Moved by his intent to sacrifice himself, Lana uses their ship's weapons to hold the villain back. Unfortunately, the cyborg retaliates, and the life support systems on the ship are damaged, requiring Steel to rescue her.
Fortunately, before Wonder Woman has to kill Superman, Batman successfully disposes of the Kryptonite, allowing Clark to wrest control back.
High in Earth's orbit, Lana and Steel realize that despite the appearance of their success, something worse is on the way.
