Synopsis for "Vigil"
Zod is in intensive care, and Ursa is at his bedside. She has loved him for years, but his devotion to his career was always too great for him to feel anything for her. Even when they were in the Phantom Zone together and she bore him a child, he couldn't make himself leave his calling.
She understands, because she was once quite similar. As the leader of Black Zero, the elite unit of the entire Kryptonian armed forces, she was fearless, and inspired the same in her subordinates. But that ended the day Black Zero was decimated: The day Brainiac came to Kandor.
Even in the face of overwhelming and seemingly implacable odds, Ursa did not break, and when Ak-Var and his wife, Tes, broke rank to save their daughter Thara, Ursa laid down suppressive fire. But when Ak-Var and Tes died, Ursa was faced with the knowledge that she had lost, and something broke. She ran, leaving a tearful Thara Ak-Var to be shepherded into the city by the Brainiac drones.
Ursa's self-image shattered that day, and she formed a new one based around Zod. Should he die, she does not know what will become of her.

Synopsis for "Blood-Sisters: A Tale of Old Krypton"
In Kandor, Supergirl is furious at her friend, Thara Ak-Var. Thara was the bodyguard of Kara's father, Zor-El, and she was missing when he died. Kara demands answers, but Thara cannot say why (presumably something related to her activites as Flamebird). Kara flies away in grief, leaving Thara to remember a happier time:
Years earlier, when Thara was sleeping over, Kara had hacked into the house security using a welding torch and the two had sneaked out to see the Fire Falls. Kara rattled off the scientific explanation for the Fire Falls - the blood blooms of the area secrete a flammable chemical - but Thara took refuge in the legend of Rao the Sun-God and Cythonna the Ice-Goddess. On the way to the Fire Falls, they passed a giant avian, which they believed they sneaked past.
At the Fire Falls, the two were amazed by the beauty of the area. Kara went looking for blood blooms, while Thara decided to meditate. Kara's search was cut short by the arrival of the giant avian. As she was carried away, Thara covered the avian's head in the flammable juice of a blood bloom, and Kara kills the beast with the soldering stick.
Thara cuts her hand on one of the crystals of a blood bloom, leading Kara to decide to do the same. The trial has forged a friendship which the two girls believe will last the rest of their lives, and they each take one half of the crystal as a reminder.
At the memorial service, Thara decides to tell Kara why she couldn't be there for Zor-El, but Kara walks away. She regards their friendship as over. Thara is left holding her half of the crystal, remembering.
