Synopsis for "Up in the Sky, Part 9: If Not An Angel"

This story is reprinted from Superman Giant #12.

Superman agrees to an offer made by Darkseid and flies away to a planet where a dying alien prays to the lord to send an angel, not having the courage to cut their own throat. As Superman arrives, the alien believes he's an angel and tells him he's suffering from an incurable illness due to which they've started suffering from delusions. They request his help in euthanizing him with the knife the doctor-priests gave him, they state they don't want to experience the pain that he will eventually suffer from the illness if he stays alive.

After the sick alien asks him to tell a tale before he dies, Clark narrates the tale of how a girl was kidnapped while playing with her sister and called out for an angel to save her, just like him. The angel after hearing of her troubles, left everything he had behind and went through many troubles to find her. He arrived in hell to look for the girl and arrived before the devil himself after defeating his demons. The devil agreed to help him in finding the girl if he took an innocent life, so he could take joy in him violating his own promises. After being unable to find another way, the angel assented.

This as it turns out was a narration of Superman looking for Alice after she was kidnapped. He went to Apokolips to find her location. After beating Kanto, Steppenwolf and Kalibak, he came before Darkseid who agreed to help him if he killed someone innocent. He hesitates in killing the alien, having been taught his whole life never to kill but tells himself he has to find Alice. Flying back to Apokolips, he tells Darkseid he did as asked of him, but is accused of lying. Superman states whether he lied or not, he has still broken his vows. The dark lord starts smiling, as Superman states he won regardless and demands to know Alice's location.

Synopsis for "Up in the Sky, Part 10: The Offer"

This story is reprinted from Superman Giant #13.

Superman is told of getting up peacefully one morning, without a worry in the world and dressing up in his superhero disguise calmly and slowly while hearing Lois talk about her latest story. After he goes out, he stops at the court to testify against Lex Luthor and when asked if Metropolis could recover from his action, he states yes as he could never destroy what this city really stood for. As he later looks for any trouble, he doesn't spot any and decides to go to work after getting bored.

As he writes an article about corruption in the federal government, he hears Lois and Perry arguing before going back to his work. As he tries to refine the first paragraph, he tries to remember what his father would say about it. As he does, he is told he has enough time to write up a good article. He later has lunch together with Batman and Wonder Woman, where he reminisces about the days gone by, makes jokes, asks them about their families and kids, why he still dresses up as a hero and they promise to see each other again.

In the afternoon he plays with children and in the night asks Lois to accompany him to the moon to watch the Earth rise. Back home, he learns of a cat stuck in a tree but tries to find if there's a more important emergency that needs to be dealt with first. Finding nothing, he rescues the cat and goes back home to rest. The person then states that he has failed in stopping him no matter what he threw his way, but with his resources he can give him the peaceful life he just told him about. Superman declines and states he prefers Alice going back home.
