Synopsis for "The City of Secrets"
The story opens with an active scan of Metropolis from an unknown machine happening in real time.
Meanwhile at the heart of Metropolis, Superman battles with two godzilla sized toy robots, seemingly the creations of the infamous Toyman.
Nearby, Lois Lane and her staff of reporters with focuses in different fields of topics for the newspaper are huddled together staring out the window of the Daily Planet building, overlooking the battle. Lois inquires as to the headlines scheduled for the following day and to the stories the reporters have in mind. Each news scoop they have in mind is initially bland and unexciting, involving some sort of travel required for each of them to go to in order to gather more information about their prospective stories. Lois enthusiastically and demandingly orders them all to go with hope they may be able to report on something interesting as investigative reporters.
Jimmy Olsen and Lisa Lombard are sent to the newly organized Supercorp (formally LexCorp), to interview the acting CEO Mercy Graves and for promised photo opportunities within. Upon arrival, they are given Superman related merchandise and a tour of the facility featuring the different floors of operation. Inside they notice Parasite in uniform and carrying boxes seemingly working. Mercy explains how Superman allowed for a type of rehab work program for him after his attack on Metropolis. Jimmy and Lisa go off topic and ask about Mercy's personal history with Lex, probing her on her dark history and questioning her change of heart to which she attempts to change the topic. Suddenly, a creature resembling parasite runs at them screaming. Mercy's arm transforms into a mechanized gun, (powers she obtained from the Lazarus Rains in the events of Lazarus Planet), and shoots at the creature missing. The creature cowers in a corner, to which Parasite approaches and explains it must be a remnant of himself that got stuck within the building at the end of Superman #3, and failed to absorb back into him. He requests if he can keep it as a pet, to which Mercy obliges. Jimmy snaps a photo of Parasite embracing his new pet.
Superman hovers over the now defeated Toy machinations with a Supercorp team analyzing the wreckage.
Meanwhile in Lois's office, sportscaster Steve Lombard explains how he had trouble with his interview opportunity with Livewire at Stryker's Island, stating she was uncooperative and rude. Lois decides to take the matter into her own hands and heads for Stryker's Island herself. While at Stryker's Island, Livewire congratulates Lois on her promotion to editor in chief. In a neighboring room, Red Cloud overhears this news becoming infuriated and attacking the guards surrounding Lois and Livewire. Lois makes her way to a downed guard and obtains the key to the chains handcuffing Livewire, promising her a story of good clout and putting her in a publicly positive light in exchange for her defense against Red Cloud. Livewire agrees and works with Lois and the guards to herd Red Cloud back into a contained cell. In addition to her clout, Lois proposes an alliance with Livewire for a separate mission.
Meanwhile, Supercorp relays Toyman's tracked location to Superman, coming from a nearby warehouse. Superman enters, finding Toyman in chains and bleeding. Upon setting him free, Toyman tells Superman “two bad boys wanting a playdate” captured him and stole his robots.
Back at the Daily Planet, Lois's other staff search through the Daily Planet archives looking for any stories on Lex Luthor from his first five years in the city.
That night in Suicide Slum, reporter Cat Grant is in a Metropolis Police squad car for a ride along. While patrolling the streets, three gunmen are seen leaving a bank shooting, and jump into a getaway car outside. Cat's squad car follows and calls for backup just before Marilyn Moonlight on horseback pursues the getaway car and stops it on the road not far from the crime scene. The police apprehend the criminals and Cat takes the opportunity to interview Marilyn before continuing with the ride along.
The next day the newspaper with all their stories, appearing vibrant and exciting, is previewed and the Daily Planet staff appear happy before heading home. Lois heads to the roof of the Daily Planet to meet with Superman who follows her inside and changes into work clothes. Lois explains to Clark that someone within the Daily Planet destroyed and deleted all files pertaining to Lex Luthor's first five years in Metropolis and proof of his prior heroism intentionally, accusing Perry White of doing so as she explains the evidence.
Meanwhile, Perry White shows a political poster with his name, showing his intentions to run for the Mayor of Metropolis in the upcoming election.
Nearby, Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft harvest a small sample of blood from a chained up Lobo with a special syringe designed by Toyman. Upon analyzing the blood sample, Lobo threatens the two if he is ever set free and Dr. Pharm is perplexed at Lobo's unique DNA wondering if other Czarnians had similar genetics. Lobo retorts that he, alongside his daughter Crush, are the last known Czarnians in the universe, telling them that his world is dead.
Meanwhile on his ship and completing his scan of the city, Brainiac observes the world of Czarnia contained within a bottle before him. He tells the Czarnians within the bottle that the greatest secret in the Universe lies somewhere on Earth, and with their help, will obtain this secret so he will finally not be alone.
