Superman #280 is an issue of the series Superman (Volume 1) with a cover date of October, 1974.

Synopsis for "Duel of the Diamond Demons!"

Morgan Edge threatens to replace Clark Kent and Steve Lombard if they do not improve their TV ratings. Clark takes Edges threat to heart and immediately starts to focus on news stories that might help boost his own ratings. He rescues commuters from a collapsing bridge. He removes a disabled trailer from clogging traffic. He stops a runaway train and prevents the roof of the Metrodome from collapsing. He films himself doing all of these rescues as Superman. His efforts are successful and he actually improves his ratings. Clark then decides to kick off a charity drive by squeezing a lump of coal until it turns into a diamond. Steve Lombard is assigned to film the event. As Superman focuses on creating the diamond, Lombard is transformed into a diamond creature. The transformation takes place due to Lombards stored solar energy in his body. The transformation is triggered by Superman's brain waves as he focused on squeezing the piece of coal. Superman battles the diamond creature and is blasted by an energy beam from Lombards eyes. The beam starts to transform Superman into a diamond creature himself. Diamond Superman has a much easier time subduing Lombard. He strikes Lombard and knocks the solar energy out of him. Lombard and Superman are transformed back to their original form.
