Superman (Volume 2) #44 is an issue of the series Superman (Volume 2) with a cover date of June, 1990.

Synopsis for "Green Death in Crime Alley"

Cat Grant, her son Adam, and Jose Delgado walk out of the theatre and enter a dark alley. Detective Slam Bradley follows them and witnesses how an invisible hitman hired by Intergang attempts to kidnap Cat Grant. Jose manages to save Cat and take her away from the alley. Superman shows up in the scene and destroys the cloaking device of the hitman, and tells him to warn the people of Intergang to stay away from Cat Grant. Superman hears Emil Hamilton's signal device and flies away to meet him in his lab.

Hamilton tells Superman that the green rock he brought from the Evil Factory is not Kryptonite, but a mineral of earthly origin with some radioactivity still present in it. Hamilton's theory is that the rock is a by-product of the Eradicator's attempts to re-create Krypton on Earth. This conversation leads Superman to visit the Fortress of Solitude in the Antarctic, which is still in ruins after the destruction of the Eradicator. Superman rebuilds the statue of his Kryptonian parents and returns to Metropolis in time for a date with Lois Lane.

Inside a Metropolis morgue, a coroner investigates the corpse of a brutally murdered woman, with traces of radioactivity in her glove. Inspector Henderson is disgusted by the murder and is determined to save Metropolis from becoming Gotham City. Meanwhile, in Gotham, Batman stops a thief stealing from a vagabond. Unfortunately, the victim died seconds after Batman's arrival. Inspecting the possessions the burglar tried to steal, Batman finds a Kryptonite Ring and decides to take it with him to investigate. He finds out the vagrant came from Metropolis and decides to ask for Superman's help on this case.
