Quote1 See, Jon, a real hero with your dad's power would put an end to the hurt and suffering. Spare the innocent their pain...but not your glorious pop. For all his preaching and jazzy new kecks, we both know he's full o' fluff. Mark my words--day's coming where there'll be no place left for his brand of wave and smile. Gentle green cleaner sold to good-intentioned housewives won't cut it. We need steel wool and bleach. Quote2

Synopsis for "Black Dawn, Chapter 5"

Kathy and her grandfather Cobb were part of a group of alien refugees fleeing from an army called the Kroog, who had killed Kathy's parents and destroyed her home planet. The refugees had come to ask Manchester Black for help in escaping the Kroog and find a safe planet to settle into. After killing the Kroog soldiers that had boarded the ship, Black agrees to take the to Earth and to teach them to kill anyone who opposes them.

Unfortunately, the present is not as idyllic as the refugees had hoped. Hamilton, the town the refugees had founded in an attempt live peaceful lives, is still attacked by unwanted parties and Cobb fears that Black's involvement has only made things worse for the refugees. His fellow refugees disagree, believing that following Black's orders has kept them safe. Cobb demands to speak with Black but he is instead told to take Kathy home and await for further orders.

Superman has taken Lois to the hospital so she could get treatment for her injured leg. Realizing the people of Hamilton know everything about them, he apologizes for endangering her and Jon, but Lois trusts him to make things right and to save their son. Superman flies to Cobb's household and finds a series of tunnels underneath the house's foundations. Suddenly, he is ambushed by Black, who still holds Superboy captive and has contaminated his nervous system with his black substance to nullify his powers. Superman and Krypto attempt to rescue Superboy, but Black incapacitates Krypto and captures Superman with his black substance.

Superman is taken to the same underground chamber as Black's other prisoners, and Black explains that the underground chamber is actually part of the ship used by the refugees to escape to Earth. The ship's quantum technology has grown unstable and the quantum rifts used by the ship to travel across space can cause untold damage to the planet. Black also says that he just can't kill Superman, otherwise he would be just creating a martyr. Instead, he plans to discredit Superman in order to bring Superboy to his side.

Suddenly, Kathy and Cobb arrive and confront Black, outraged that he has only brought more danger to their lives when he promised to protect them. This distraction allows Superman to break free from the black substance and release his fellow prisoners. Unfortunately, Cobb is left gravely injured and Black uses his black substance to brainwash Superboy and the Super-Elite, ordering them to destroy Superman and his allies.
