Synopsis for "Chaos, Part One"
Three weeks ago, Department of Extranormal Operations agent Veronica Bisette was driving to the D.E.O. as fast she could. She was holding a dangerous object and had requested the D.E.O. to run a full examination of it once she arrived. Unfortunately, that was the same time Leviathan had sent one of its creatures to attack the D.E.O.. As the creature enveloped the building in its blue light, Adam Strange and Director Bones evacuated as many as they could. Agent Bissette arrived just in time to see the whole building disappear and, suddenly, the object enveloped it in a mysterious light of its own.
Later that night, Veronica awakened on her bed and realized the object, a mystical amulet of some kind, had attached itself to her right arm. The amulet began glowing and released the entity trapped within: Xanadoth, lord of the Lords of Chaos. As Xanadoth asks how long had he been sealed within the amulet, he only comes to one answer: "Fate."
Yesterday, under Xanadoth's orders, Veronica visited the shop of Madame Xanadu and asked for the breastplate of Hoku. When Xanadu asks why would Veronica need should an object, Xanadoth hits the whole place with an explosion.
In the present day, Superman arrives at the Hall of Justice, where he is greeted by the Wonder Twins and a group of visitors. As the Wonder Twins talks about how weird is calling Superman just "Clark", Superman reveals he has come to an appointment with Doctor Fate, who brings Superman to the Justice League Dark. Superman and the Justice League Dark exchange friendly words, but Zatanna tells Superman she cannot undo what he did. Doctor Fate believes their conversation with Superman should be private, so he brings the Man of Steel to the Tower of Fate.
Once there, Superman asks Doctor Fate to run a magical examination of him in order to make sure he is not under some sort of magical influence. Doctor Fate agrees but finds no trace of demonic possession or paranormal energy fields in Superman's essence. Superman's recent choices were made of his own free will, but Superman finds no comfort in that. Doctor Fate removes his helmet and introduces himself as Khalid Nassour and Superman tells him about recent events with Jor-El and Jon, about how Jor-El took Jon into space but lost at a time warp and now, Jon had become a man. Superman believed allowing Jon to travel alongside Jor-El was a good idea because he wanted Jon to experience things he never could. Jon had joined the Legion of Super-Heroes and was now living in the future, a thousand years from now.
Khalid asks Superman if he is okay with all that's happening. Superman says Jon is old enough to make his own decisions, but Khalid can see Superman is frustrated with all that's happening. Superman admits he does feel frustrated over the fact that he missed out on his son's formative years. Even if he didn't lose his son, he still wasn't there to watch him become a man. Khalid asks how does Lois feel about all of this and Superman replies that her father died recently. Jor-El died, as well. He was sentenced to death by the United Planets, an organization in which Jon assisted in its own founding. Khalid asks Superman how does he feel about his father's death, but Superman says his own feelings are irrelevant.
Superman tells Doctor Fate that he feels he has lost control over his life and Doctor Fate believes that, by revealing his secret identity to the entire world, Superman just wanted to take some control back. Khalid tells Superman that nobody except himself understands what Superman is going through and the only way for people to understand Superman's predicament is if he talks about it. Even Superman himself is trying to process it all and no one, not even himself, should judge his decisions.
Unfortunately, the conversation is cut short when Xanadoth breaks into the Tower and demands that Khalid hand over the Helmet of Fate.
